A direct Stafford Loan is something that is available to just about anyone, citizen or not, and no credit check or cosigner is mandatory (9). Additionally, a Stafford Loan is available both subsidized and subsidized, meaning that either the government will pay for the interest on the loan (subsidized), or you (the person who has taken out the loan) will be the one paying the interest, but you can postpone payments until post-graduation (9).

A Federal Perkins Loan is similar to the Stafford Loan in that many people, citizen or not, can be eligible, and that a credit check or cosigner is not mandatory (8). In contrast, this loan is given out by that of necessity financial assistance, which can vary from school to school (9).

Direct PLUS Loans for Parents

The Direct PLUS Loan has two different loan types; there is the Direct PLUS loan for Graduate Students and Professional Degree students (which is something that I don't think that I'll need to worry about too heavily in the near future), and there are the Direct PLUS Loans for Parents, which really deals with the cost of tuition for a dependent student enrolled in an undergraduate program (9). Unlike some of the other loan types, this loan does require a credit check for the parents of the dependent, and it is possible to loan up to the full cost of education that isn't covered otherwise (9).

Which of These is Best for Me

Of the three types of loans that I've listed in this assignment, I think that the most practical loan that I could receive could be, if I were to be eligible for it, the Federal Perkins Loan. Of the three given, I believe that the Perkins Loan has the lowest interest rate to worry about. However, the availability of the loan is a huge variable, as it could be possible that I'm not eligible for the loan.

After that I think that a Stafford Loan could work out well for me, though I've yet to decide whether or not a subsidized or subsidized loan would be a better option for me; I think some further thought would need to be involved. That being said, a Stafford Loan is one that I would be able to postpone payments for -- which could be a good thing, though it could be a really bad thing, depending on how I navigate my financial situation during my education.

Finally, I think that, of the three loan types that I have listed here, the Direct PLUS Loan for Parents would be the least favorable type of loan, specifically because of the burden that it would put on my parents, especially with the slightly higher interest rate. I can imagine that payments for that would only postpone things like their own retirement; I don't think that I could live with that decision.
