The heart of Tafiti is a powerful symbol. Maui steals it to give power to the humans, but it ends up angering the Goddess Pele so much that she is killing the islands where the people live. It's symbolic of Maui's struggle because he stole it to gain adoration. He needs to learn to accept himself, not try to gain love by underhanded means.
