I believe Hobbes is right to a certain degree that everyone is selfish in their own way. Even things done for charity have some sort of selfish reasoning, either to make yourself feel better , to talk about it in self loathing or to be spiritually closer to god. Actors, musicians, social media celebrities all have a selfish attribute in that most of their work is done for their own reasons and gains. Celebrity charity events i believe to be a huge even for people to gain attention and recognition for being a good person, not always out of the kindness of their heart. Politicians do this same thing, when its election season and they want to gain your vote. they go out of their way to make it seem like they're not selfish when clearly they're trying to gain position in power to control others.

I believe Hobbes's view of human nature although dark to some is actually more accurate than people like to admit to themselves. Hobbes believed morals don't exist and people only act out of their own selfish interests. He believed the only reason people stay out of trouble is not because it's the right thing to do but they avoid doing the wrong thing because there is a societal expectation to maintain a certain standing in the community. I believe each persons human nature is different like their own special identity. I'm sure there are some people out there who only follow Hobbes's theory, however, people fall more on a spectrum than a subjected box. I'm sure everyone at some point acts out of feelings of fear and distrust or selfish interests at some point in their life. But it doesn't mean that person is a fearful person, a distrustful person, or a selfish person it makes them just a person in my eyes.

I believe Hobbes's view of human nature of selfishness and acting out of fear is accurate. I believe that purposes behind all the actions made by humans can lead to selfishness such as self-motives and self-defenses. Most of the time, people are defending themselves from the morals or the standards expected by the society and the laws not to look like a selfish person. Defending themselves are already an selfish action. For instance, if people are asked for a change by a homeless person, people usually give some small changes or refuse by apologizing. One of the psychology reasons behind giving some small changes is to "help" the homeless person knowing that small changes will not get the homeless person out of the situation, it is simply a self-satisfaction. And people who refuse to give some changes usually apologize, although an apology is unnecessary in this situation, so that they do not feel bad or protecting themselves from the fear of looking selfish. However, some humans do not apply to Hobbes's view of human nature such as people who sacrifice themselves putting someone or something their prioritize without profits. Parents of their own child or children usually act in this way.

@desmondj488 I agree that even the charity have selfish reasoning behind the kindness act. I have explained something similar with giving the situational example. Although you mentioned there are selfish reasons and master plan behind kind action of charity, I believe any kind of businesses or organizations can be considered as selfish since they would be profiting in a some type of ways. Profit or gaining is considered a selfish act.

@Elizabeth Copeland I agree with you that societal expectation maintains a certain standing in the community. I took it as that the societal expectation gives humans morals to act "right". As you mention that everyone at some points acts out of feelings but it doesn't define the person, I believe it defines the human nature. I agree with everyone is different and acting out of emotions make them more humane. It is beautiful and ugly part of humans but that is what makes us humans.

@Takuto Masuda I definitely agree that people can sometimes act out of primal instinct. These defense mechanisms are often provoked by the pressures put on by society. People often go about their day hyper focused on what others think of them. When the holiday times come it is an easy decision to take a double in your change purse ( It helps if someone you know is ringing the bell for your local red bucket). Everyone at the end of the day wants to be a good person or at least look like a good person so I believe that drives some people’s choices but not all.

@desmondj488 All acts of kindness can have ulterior motives if the wrong person/people are doing them. You can sometimes hear about people in the news getting in trouble and then you see them the next week at a charity event or donating something toward the cause they got in trouble with. This isn’t because they are an amazing person all of a sudden but because they want other people to think they are a good person. Not all people are bad though and not all charity events are done for the wrong reasons. Like I said in my post I believe that people fall on a spectrum and not one person is completely evil or good.

@Elisabeth Copeland you are right about people acting out in fear. We are a living example of that fear and people only looking out for themselves. When the pandemic first hit I remember that first month was complete chaos! It was every man for themselves in the grocery store, there wasn't a single thing on the shelves to buy. The toilet paper shortage was the craziest thing I ever saw with my own two eyes, people fighting over toilet paper showed me that if we were ever in a national world wide lock down we would tear each other apart. Some might come together in small groups but i know there are people out there that only wish for bad things to happen.

I also agree about the selfishness behind charity events and business opportunities. Just look at our lives today, every single company is jumping on the bandwagon for all protest clearly just to save face and sell merchandise. I believe if weren't able to message these companies directly via twitter or other social media platforms, these companies wouldn't feel pressed to say or do anything about worldly causes. They ultimately do nothing about it, just make a statement, make a clothing line or some other merchandise and contribute actually nothing to anyone or anything.
