Gasping for release, the people of the 17th century escaped the deathly grasps of the Dark Ages, but still found unbearable ways to torture, scold or kill individuals who were suspected of carrying out a crime. Some of the torturous devices that were used to punish individuals found guilty were : the wheel, the gossip's bridle and the iron maiden. Even in some instances, these criminals, found guilty or not, weren't given adequate protection from the accusations they faced. During courts, “ A Defendant's chances in receiving any acquittal in court extremely slim. Trials were designed in the favor of the prosecutors and defendants accused any of the above crimes were not even allowed legal counsel! “ (Elizabethan Crime and Punishment. William Shakespeare Site Map,http://www.william-shakespeare.info/elizabethan-crime-punishment.htm. Accessed 24 Apr. 2019.)

Frightened by overwhelming punishments, people of Elizabethan England were terrified by the consequences their actions dragged along. With overbearing and outrageous repercussions of their actions, the people feared beheadings, hangings and burnings. In the instance of burings, “ Being burnt at the stake was a punishment which was used during the reign of 'Bloody Mary' - Queen Elizabeth's elder sister… Executioners sometimes showed mercy to their victims by placing gunpowder at the base of the stake which helped the victims to a swifter, and less painful, death. “ Yet another terrifying aspect of execution was beheading. When someone was found guilty, that person was put on display for several to observe and “ executioners often took several blows before the head was finally severed. “ ( Elizabethan Crime and Punishment. William Shakespeare Site Map,http://www.william-shakespeare.info/elizabethan-crime-punishment.htm. Accessed 24 Apr. 2019.)
