James Monroe goes on a good-will tour of the nation. He primarily focuses on visiting Federalist-dominated New England to reconcile differences and help future support. A Boston newspaper coined the term “Era of Good Feelings” to describe the national attitude. This was one of the first things he did during his presidency. The American Colonization Society is founded to help free blacks resettle in Africa. Fugitive slaves in Florida and Native Americans fight together against the forces of Andrew Jackson in the First Seminole War. The state of Georgia officially bans the slave trade.

Before the War of 1812, Congress had levied low tariffs on imports as a method for raising government revenue. Then, during the war manufacturers erected many factories to supply goods imported from Britain. In peacetime, these American manufacturers feared that British goods would be dumped on American markets and take away their business. Congress raised tariffs for the express purpose of protecting U.S. manufacturers from competition rather than simply revenue. This was the first protective tariff in the history of the U.S.

Henry's Clays of Kentucky, a leader in the house of representatives, proposed a comprehensive method for advancing the nation's economic growth. His plan consisted of three parts first protective tariffs, second a national bank and lastly internal improvements. He decided to create this because he believed protective tariffs would increase revenue, national bank would allow the system to run smoothly and internal improvements would promote growth in the West and the South.

James Monroe wins reelection in 1820 running virtually unopposed. He carried all states and all but one electoral vote due to a faithless elector. Monroe himself considered his nearly unanimous election to be a vindication of his policies, though it may rather have come from voter indifference. After months of fierce debate, Congress agrees to the first Missouri Compromise, addressing congressional jurisdiction over the conditions of statehood. After Maine petitions Congress for statehood, the balance of free and slave states in Senate will be maintained with a free Maine and a slave Missouri. The Compromise also addresses all land in the Louisiana Purchase territory and establishes that land north of the 36 degree, 30' line—with the exception of Missouri—will be free, while territory below the line will be slave. In February 1821, Congress admits Maine and Missouri as states, formalizing the Missouri Compromise. Henry Clay, “the Great Pacificator,” is by and large the architect of the Compromise. Monroe Signs Missouri Compromise.

The Rush-Bagot Treaty was signed in 1817 between the United States and Britain. It limited the number of warships both countries could have on the Great Lakes and helped keep peace along the U.S.-Canada border. This treaty made the relationship between the two nations friendlier after the War of 1812. By reducing military tensions it created friendly connections, the Rush-Bagot Treaty was an important step toward a more peaceful and cooperative future with the different countries.
