Many African Americans improved their political status during Reconstruction. Most of them participated in their own churches, and some of the ministers of those churches went on to become influential community members. Many African Americans had the right to vote. Further more, Hiram Revels, an African American, was elected to become a senator in Congress.

Now I have voted for Hiram Revels to be a Senator in Congress! I am also a participant in my local church (I forgot the name of it though). I can see a bright future for me and my kin in America.

This is a political cartoon showing the work of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and Southern whites. The Klan was a Southern American terrorist group that killed many African Americans in their wake. Their main goals were to scare freed slaves and deprive them of their rights, and to destroy the power of the Republican Party. They worked together with independent Southerners to accomplish these goals.

Congress passed the Compromise of 1877 following the election of 1876. The Compromise addressed the situation of Hays' victory in the Presidential Election of 1876. It states that Hays will remain as the president as long as he pulls the military out of the South. This ensures that the South will regain power, and may end Reconstruction.

Was Reconstruction a Success?

Reconstruction was a success. The Reconstructions' main goals were to readmit the seceded states, and to give African Americans equal rights. The re-admittance of the seceded states was a very easy process due to the ten and fifty percent plans. The goal of giving the freed slaves equal rights was a different story though.

Reconstruction was gaining a lot of progress during Radical Reconstruction in terms of helping free slaves. The 14th and 15th amendments kept the rights of African Americans safe from state legislatures. However, much of the progress made by Reconstruction was reversed by 1877-78, but Reconstruction was a giant step in the right direction for African Americans. First off, the 14th and 15th amendments couldn't be erased because they were amendments (constitutional laws). Second, Reconstruction was responsible for the setup of many African American churches and communities. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr would come from an African American church, and he would clearly be the most major player for the Civil Rights African Americans. Also, there were ways for African Americans to make money now, which is a far sight better than forced free labor (slavery). When everything adds up, Reconstruction was the foundation for the equality of African Americans among whites.
