Douglass is showing ethos by explaining what each slave gets per month. Douglass has that credibility because he has physically been there and knows how everything is done through slavery. The quote depicts many different things about what the slaves had to go through. To only have 1 of everything and work all day and all night must have been horrific. The smell of everybody's old clothes that haven't been washed must have affected the workers and what they had to do. Since they only get one pair of everything, they had to fight through the pain when that something wore out.

Men and woman in slavery had a monthly allowance of food and clothing. Douglass asserts credibility as he explains "Their yearly clothing consisted of two coarse linen shirts, one jacket, one pair of trousers for the winter, made of coarse negro cloth, one pair of stockings, and one pair of shoes."(6)

What each of these quotes is explaining is that he wanted to have a deep connection with his mother, but each time he had the chance, it was taken away. From personal experience, I see my mom every day so if that were to be taken away from myself, I couldn't imagine life without her. He shows his emotion by elaborating that he never got to see his mother and would've done anything to see her.

He uses logic by explaining he excitement for his departure from the plantation and exploring the world on his own. He has been through so many rough times that he doesn't care if Douglass is on his own, he just wants to get out and see what life has in store for him.
