According to Bandura, the most important source of self-efficacy is past performance. Participants who have succeeded on certain tasks are likely to have more confidence to complete similar tasks in the future (high self-efficacy) than those who have been unsuccessful (low self-efficacy).

The target of this exercise is to make trainees/students aware of maybe hidden strengths, or strengths they have already shown in the past and to make these strengths available for present challenges. Therefore the trainees/students are guided through a guided imagery programme.

Source: http://www.resilience-project.eu/

Guided imagery programme

Trainers can boost self-efficacy through, guiding trainees to remember and describe tasks they have already successfully completed in the past.

Description – Clear Steps

Step 1
The trainer explains the difference between happiness and joy:

“Happiness is always allocated in the here and now. You can’t be happy somewhere else. Like breathing you only have this special moment in the here and now, the moment when you breathe in and the moment when you breathe out. It’s always in the present, in the here and now. It’s important to reflect on what true happiness is and where it can be found. A moment's reflection will show that you can't find it in the past or the future. The past is gone and your memory of it is unreliable. The future is a blank uncertainty. So the only place we can really find happiness is in the present.

On the other hand we have joy. And joy always goes together with time – with the future or the past. You can either look forward to or have a pleasant anticipation when you think of things in the future about to happen that you really like, or you can look back and remember things, situations you enjoyed.

While happiness goes together with awareness, with being in the here and now, joy goes together with thinking and thinking always needs time, in the past or the future: to make plans (future), to compare (past), to decide on the basis of experiences (past) and so on.

Step 2:The trainer illustrates that in times of difficulty, when people are in trouble, they sometimes are not aware of all the strengths they have shown in the past and he/she guides the trainees to memorize a special moment of happiness:

“You can use the power of pleasant memories to think of situations that brought a lot of joy into your life. This can also help you when you find yourself in an unpleasant situation. In situations like these, pleasant memories are strong sources of power.

Close your eyes and relax You can now either listen to the music and experience what kind of feelings you experience or you can listen to my voice, listen to what I am saying to you and let me invite you on a journey, where you can discover great experiences.

Pay attention to your breath and be aware of your breathing. Don’t force anything. Just watch yourself while you are breathing in and out. Feel how your muscles can relax now. While you are breathing in and out you can experience how you can relax more and more. While you are listening to me you are getting into a more and morerelaxed and attentive state of awareness.

Try now to think of one of these joyful situations once again and try to get as close to the situation as you can. Be a part of this situation and experience this special situation with all your senses. What can you see in this special moment? Are there any other people or are you alone? What can you hear? Is someone talking or are you saying something to yourself? Or are there any other sounds you can hear? And what do you feel in this moment? Are you touching somebody or something? Do you hold something in your hands? What are you feeling inside while you are in this special moment? And is there also a specific taste you can experience? Try to experience this moment with all your senses and when you get the feeling that this situation is now very intense try to make it a little bit more intense now so that you can enjoy this moment more and more.

And now think of all the skills you are using in this moment. Think of all your talents you can need in this special event. What are you doing and what kind of skills are you using while you are in this moment? Experience this moment with all your senses while using all your skills and talents in this special event.

Say good bye now to this special moment and think of a challenge you have to master in the present or in the near future. Try to experience this situation with all your senses, too. What can you see, what can you hear and what can you feel? Experience now how you are also using your skills and talents while you are facing thischallenge.

Now come back to the here and now in your own time. You can either take a deep breath or you can move your body gently to come back into this room into the here and now. Maybe you can also bring this good feeling you experienced while doing this exercise with you while you are coming back from your memories.

Now open your eyes and look around. See who else is sitting here and bear in mind all your talents and skills while you are becoming aware of the moment here and now.”

Step 3:The trainees use the hand-outs and write down the pleasant memory they just have experienced and focus on their strengths and talents which they have used in this situation. The hand-out stays with the trainees and can be used as a reminder of strengths to master prospective challenges.
