The primary care of the Affordable Care Act defines primary care practitioners as physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. In this aspect occupational therapy is a supplemental service. The goal of the primary care within the ACA is to “improve the health care system’s support for primary medical care. To assure that governmental commitment to primary care is as strong as possible, we believe the following provisions that were included in the ACA should be fully implemented.” This goal sounds ideal but the inclusion criteria limits occupational therapists role in this. As occupational therapist we play a big role in the wellness of people and helping rehabilitate patients which can lead to less hospitalization and costs down the road. As Occupational therapist we should fight to have therapy be included in the definition of Primary care so our services can be covered and patients have the best opportunity at a healthy hospital free life.

As mentioned previously, the purpose of Primary care of the Affordable Care act is to implement collaborative care, shared decision making, as well as sustain relationships with patients with healthcare clinicians. As for the role of occupational therapists in this particular section of the affordable care act, we are required to provide and address patients needs. Some of the examples that I found to be specific to occupational therapists role as a clinician is to provide education to patients on : safety and fall prevention, driving and community mobility, health promotion and behavioral health management, and ensuring access to community resources. Here are a couple of links that I found to be beneficial for others to gain a better understanding of the primary care in the affordable care act regarding the role of occupational therapists.

http://ajot.aota.org/article.aspx?articleid=1851568

https://www.aota.org/-/media/Corporate/Files/Publications/Primary-Care-Position-Paper.PDF
