Houston's new "Clean and Green" Program will allow criminals charged with low-level, nonviolent misdemeanors to clear up their criminal records by helping clean Houston waterways. This is a great initiative, because Houston will have one of the toughest hurricane recoveries ever on their hands for the next few years. Participants will help clear storm debris and invasive plants around the waterways.

A study done by mechanical engineers at The University of Texas at Austin proves that sunlight and hydrogels (high water absorbency) can effectively create clean drinking water, either from ocean water or contaminated supply. This method is very cost effective, and also compact.

One of Tesla's new Model X cars crashed and caught on fire March 23rd, killing the driver of the car. The fact that the car was on autopilot causes many to be concerned for the future of self-driving cars, which appeared to be very promising. Statistics from the recovered car indicate that the driver was almost entirely inactive in the moments leading up to the crash.

This is a small win for environmental groups in Congress's 2018 spending bill. It provided $3 million to the State Department to pay dues to the UN framework convention for climate change. This number isn't very generous, compared to the usual $10 million, or even Trump's proposed $6.4 million, but with many climate change skeptics in major positions (Pruitt, Pompeo) many environmental groups are lucky to receive any funding.

On April 11th, seven public advocacy groups sent a letter to U.S. senators urging them to resist the nomination for Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State. Pompeo has a strong anti-environmental record. In the letter, these concerned groups state that Pompeo will "weaken the State Department's Influence abroad" if appointed. They say that Pompeo's anti-environmental views will make us appear weaker to other countries around the world.

To shore up beaches, just add sand? - https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/04/180409090148.htm

These sand nourishment projects cost multiple millions of dollars, and their long-term effectiveness is unknown. The projects aim to combat flooding and erosion. The article talks about projects going on at the beaches of California, but these projects are also going on at the Jersey shore every year. The biggest question with these projects is the movement of sand. Obviously, with sand being as light as it is, it never stays in one place. Climate change is bringing higher sea levels, so these projects are a combatant of that.
