milestone #1 - museum visit

(a) What piques your curiosity?
It piqued my curiosity to see a recreation of a drive-in cinema in the museum, as I haven't visited one in real life, especially not in Singapore. Thus, I was surprised to find out that this recreation was based on the old Jurong drive-in cinema in Singapore.

(b) What resonates with you or arouses a response or triggers a memory?
It triggers my childhood memories of falling asleep in the car, and having to be carried home by my parents from the car after a long day of family bonding or while coming back from a late night movie. The addition of the false sky with bright lights acting as stars add to the overall coziness of the setting, particularly when sitting in the faux cars.

(c) Where can we find or associate in today's context?
Drive-in theatres are not as popular as they were in the past, and Singapore's only one is no longer in operation. However, such theatres can still be found in other countries such as the US. Notably, during the initial onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, drive-in theaters reported an unexpected surge in attendance in several U.S. states, as unlike with indoor theaters unable to operate because of bans on mass gatherings, these were allowed to operate, with such events as graduations, because people are automatically separated from each other by their cars, and usually enough space remains to walk around and still practice proper physical distancing.

Such drive-in theatres can be associated with other forms of open-air entertainment, such as outdoor theatres and performances, namely the Cinewav Seaside Cinema at Keppel Bay, and Ballet Under the Stars at Fort Canning Green.

Origins of outdoor entertainment
Outdoor entertainment seems to date back to the 10th century where performance appeared in church services, particularly at Easter time. Stories from the Bible were often dramatised to the congregation because many could not read.

The birth of open-air cinema
Cinema technology was born from the invention of cinematography by the Lumiere brothers in the 20th century. The first ever Outdoor Picture Gardens was opened in Australia in 1916. An outdoor cinema consists of a digital or analog movie projector, scaffolded construction or inflatable movie screen, and sound system.
Sun Pictures opened with a silent movie, English Racing Drama ‘Kissing Cup’ with supporting ‘Bachelor Brown’ Comic.

Viewing experience
Viewers usually sit on camping chairs or blankets. Some Hollywood world premieres were screened in outdoor cinemas – sometimes with the stars in attendance. Most screenings are free with some raising money for charities.
