Author: Eric Carle
Illustrator: Eric Carle
Publisher: New York : Putnam & Grosset
Year of Publication: 3 June 1969

Summary and Annotation:

This book is a children's story about a little caterpillar who hatches from an egg and begins munching all of that in sight. He experiences a stomach pain after six days of consuming fruits, sweets, and "junk" food. The caterpillar feels considerably better after eating a "lovely leaf" on the seventh day.
This book is helpful to teach children about insects and the life cycles of moths and butterflies. Reading this story aloud to children and asking them to anticipate which number and day of the week might come next would help them strengthen their abilities. Students may make their own caterpillars and butterflies, as well as nests for the caterpillars to live in.
