In an online distance LE it is easier to use digital technologies. Also, the moments when the teacher asks for attention are less disturbed by distractions.Students are encouraged to develop more autonomy and a sense of responsibility. If the pupils follow the lessons from home, they will be more comfortable and relaxed because they are in a familiar environment (e.g. they are not afraid of forgetting the materials...). In an online distance LE it is also possible to try to diversify the spaces, although perhaps this implies organisational problems that are difficult to solve, at least in italy. Inmates cannot access Internet and the use of computers and other didigtal devices are very limited. Migrants and other vulnerable communities have not the necessary skills and devices to engage in online-learning. But difficulties may not be only from socio-economic reasons, but also from inland, peripherial or isolated territories where access to Internet and other digital tools is not always guaranteed.
So exclusively Distance LE is socially unfair and widens the gap between "haves" and "have-nots", and different communities.

Pupils often get distracted because they are at home and not in the in-school classroom. The internet connection is often bad, they can not listen or sometimes speak (due to problems with their microphone), technical issues. It's difficult for the teacher to assess what each pupil has learned and measure their progress in every session, because the teacher can't have the feedback he has in in-school classroom , it is much more time consuming and tiring for the teacher to obtain the feedback he/she needs in order to plan the next teaching steps.

If you work with more than 15 students at the same time and you have only 40 minutes (Zoom),
1) a very small amount of work is done.
2) the same active part of students works every lesson, others remain silent or even hide behind switched off cameras. As a result, you cannot control if they have learned something during the lesson.
3) there are quite many students with very weak comprehensive skills, who cannot work at the same pace as their classmates, consequently you have to work with them individually in your free and unpaid time.
From my personal experience I have noticed that modern students are not able to comprehend the information shown in tables, do not wish to read a text longer than one paragraph or watch a video lesson longer than 2 minutes. As a result, if you plan that during one lesson students study some kind of new SIMPLE material with the help of tables or videos you send them, but during the next lesson you practise it on Zoom, it doesn't work. You realize that they aren't prepared for your Zoom lesson.
And one more serious minus, in my opinion, is that most of the students cheat. At the end of the previous semester I had a talk with my students about their distance learning experience. They admitted that even students with good knowledge and high marks cheat if they know where from.
I am curious if somebody else has the same problems.

There is more contact and socialization of students in a brick-and-mortar classroom which makes the learning process a more enjoyable experience. Teacher guidance and peer encouragement are facilitated as questions may be answered and clarifications and feedback may be given instantly.

Depending on the "composition" of a particular group, students may sometimes find it hard to concentrate, either in order to understand what is being explained at a given moment or perfom particular tasks, as less interested peers may be making a noise.
Moreover, there is certainly less independence in the learning process which , combined with lack of technical infrastructure as is often the case -unfortunately- constrains teaching in more traditional and less engaging methods.
Finally, low-profile shy students have difficulty expressing themselves and participating more actively as they don't feel comfortable with large groups and thus fail to realise their true potential.

Just encountered one distance learning weakness... the page collapsed (actually, it's happened repeatedly during the last 15'!!!!)
Well, then, since distance learning so largely depends on the net, one of its main weaknesses is that technology may fail us (poor connections/inability to connect to servers/sudden powercuts) at any given moment and ruin our ambitious plans for inspiring teaching.
It also requires a large amount of time for planning on the teachers' part and for completing tasks online on the students' part. Spending too much time in front of a computer screen is tiring both for one's eyes and brain and has often been the source of complaint.
Socialization and student -teacher interaction is sometimes hindered especially when it comes to synchronous teaching as students often while connected to a teacher's virtual classroom,

I consider that distance education exclusively for underage students is not appropriate. Students need physical presence and expression of emotions. In my opinion we can use the method of inverted teaching, giving our students the material they need to study remotely on the corresponding asynchronous platform we use and returning to our physical classroom we continue our teaching.
In short, I argue that the appropriate method is the mixed method, where distance learning supports and enhances lifelong learning.

1. We need to make sure that we have their attention.

In-school learning offers social and emotional development, is more interesting especially for younger children and it can cover their needs. Although, some technological tools can’t be used easily, as sometimes there is lack of equipment (pcs).
