______________________________________________________________________
"The next day, when Quintus and Dumnorix hurried to the last part of the island, a soldier was searching for Dumnorix in town in vain. The affair and at last Salvius was announced. He, when he found out Dumnorix had escaped, was raging violently; all the soldiers, who guarded Dumnorix, were given an order to be punished. They searched for Quintus; when he also nowhere to be found, Belimicus, the chieftain of Cantiaci, was summoned.

"Belimicus," he said, "this Dumnorix has escaped from my hands; Quintus Caecilius is also absent. Neither Dumnorix nor Quintus are trustworthy. Quintus was often supporting Dumnorix, often having talked to him. Go now; you lead your soldiers; search for him in all parts of town. Search for his slave too. It will be easy for us to torture the slave and find out the truth in this way."

Belimicus, going out with many soldiers, ere carefully searching for him through the town. Meanwhile, Salvius was anxiously waiting for him to return. When Salvius considered the problem to himself, Belimicus suddenly triumphantly returned. The slave was dragged into the middle of the atrium.

"He ran away wickedly," he said, "but this slave, captured and questioned, revealed the truth."

Salvius turned to the shaking slave.

"Where is Quintus Caecilius?" he said. "Where did Dumnorix flee?"

"I do not know," said the slave who, having suffered a lot of torture, was hardly able to say anything."I know nothing."

Belmicus, listening to this and held the slave down by his throat as he drew his sword.

"You better be," he said, "say the truth to Salvius."

The slave who was now giving up his life,

"They prepared only six days worth of food," he mumbled. "They made nothing else. My master went with Domnorix to the farthest part of Britain."

Salvius said, "By Hercules! They are going to Agricola. Quintus, encouraged by Dumnorix, will try to block me. However, that man is foolish; he will not be able to resist me because I have more authority than him."

Salvius, when he said this, gave Belimicus an order. He ordered him to go out with 30 horsemen and arrest the fugitive. He handed over the slave to the executioner. Then he sent for the secretary who dictated a letter. He ordered one of his slaves to bring the letter as quickly as possible to Agricola.

Meanwhile, Belimicus, having followed Dumnorix and Quintus for three days, at last, found them in a forest. At once, a horseman charged at them. The friends, surrounded by the horseman, bravely resist. Finally, Dumnorix fell dead to the ground. When the horseman inspected Dumnorix's body, Quintus, seriously injured, escaped with great difficulty."
______________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________
I chose Salvius consilium cognoscit as my best translation, not because it was my most accurate translation, but because this is the translation that sounds the most like an actual story. The translations I've done in the past sounded like a little kid wrote them. And, although those translations were more accurate, they weren't as challenging as this one was. This was my best translation because it was challenging, but I managed to translate as best as I could. I was proud of myself for translating something that actually sounded like a story and it was almost completely accurate. This translation shows that I am able to translate harder stories with more vocab and grammar in them. I had troubles with some of the words and some of the endings, but I easily overcame that by looking at the Latin to English dictionary to look up the words, and if I was stuck on an ending, I would just refer to the story and see what kind of ending made sense in relation to what was happening in the story, "'Where is Quintus Caecilius?' he said. 'Where did Dumnorix flee?' 'I do not know," said the slave who, having suffered a lot of torture, was hardly able to say anything."I know nothing.'" I struggled with this part because I got confused with the endings, and for a while, I wasn't even aware there was a slave in the story because I accidentally skipped over the word when I was translating. However, after I fixed it, this part sounded like dialogue straight out of a book. I was proud of myself for overcoming this part of the translation because I got stuck on this for such a long time, and once I was able to figure out what I did wrong, it ended up sounding very natural. Salvius consilium cognoscit is my best translation because I was able to figure out how to translate a difficult Latin story into natural sounding English.

______________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________
One of the most difficult grammar topics for me this year was learning the 4th and 5th declension. It wasn't the actual delecnsion that gave me trouble, but it was having to memorzie the all the endings to them, plus remembering the endings to the first 3 declensions, and then remembering what each declension menat (masculine, feminine, neuter.) Memorizing usually isn't that hard to me, however becuase Latin is very different than any other thing I've had to learn, it was especially hard for me to rememeber the endings to these declensions. I think I've gotten better at remembering the endings, however, I definitely don't know them by heart. I have been writing down all the charts to help me remember not only the 4th and 5th declension but also to help me remember the declensions I learned early on in the year. Not only that, but I also have been writing charts for all the verb endings to help me remember those. The most difficult part of learning the new declension endings is trying not to mix them up with other declension endings. That's why this grammar topic has been the hardest for me -- I'm constantly mixing up endings, sometimes I even completely switch around what endings go with declension. To overcome this, I know I am going to have to just keep doing my charts until I memorize these endings and to write the correct ending with its corresponding declension.
______________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________
While doing this project, we had to look up a lot of facts about the Parthenon for our presentation part of the project. I learned that the Romans were basically architectural geniuses; the architects created the columns so that they were bigger on the bottom, and went inwards as they go towards the top. The point of this was to create the illusion that the columns could not support the weight of the roof. It also made the Parthenon look very straight. There are other architectural optical illusions, but the column is the main and most famous illusion. I thought it was really impressive that the architects of Ancient Rome knew how to create optical illusions by just using marble and stone. I also learned that the Parthenon was created as a temple for the goddess Athena, the patron of the city. Apparently, there used to be a huge gold and ivory statue of her inside the temple. I thought it was interesting that the Romans were so found of their gods, that they were created grand and expensive temples and statues just for them. The Parthenon is a great piece of Roman architecture with an even more impressive history.
______________________________________________________________________

Overall Satisfaction

______________________________________________________________________
Overall, I was pretty satisfied with the way my creative project turned out. However, compared to the one I did last year, this project was a step down. Last year, I created an entire fake robbery, complete with a case report, witness statements, suspect list, etc. I took a lot of time to research and make sure all of my information was accurate for my project last year. I think I had more fun doing my project last year because it was something I was very interested in. My project this year, the popsicle Parthenon, still took a lot of time and research. My partner and I looked up the history of the Parthenon for the presentation part of the assignment, which I think we could've spent a little more time doing. If we had, we could've made the popsicle Parthenon and actual scale model of the real Parthenon, instead of just gluing popsicle sticks together to look like the Parthenon when all we had to go on were pictures. Our project could've also looked a lot cleaner; there were globs of glue in certain places, or there would be stringy hot glue everywhere. If we had cleaned up a little more, then when we spray painted it, our Parthenon would've looked a lot nicer. I also think we should've paid more attention to the detailing in the front part of the roof. The image we cut out to put there was hastily glued on. I think we could've done that part a lot neater than how we ended up doing it. Overall, I'm satisfied with the way it turned out, even if there were a few ways we could've cleaned it up.
______________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________
Overall, I think I put in a lot of effort this year and, especially towards the end, excelled past where I thought I was going to be by the end of the year. Getting to Stage 24 was a huge accomplishment for me, considering how I got through 14 stages last year, I wasn't expecting to get through 10 stages that kept getting harder with every stage. Other than getting farther than I thought I was going to get to this year, the work that I put into Latin this year helped me understand what kind of student I am, seeing where I sttruggled, and where I excelled.
______________________________________________________________________

What I learned About Myself as a Student

______________________________________________________________________
What I learned about myself as a student is that even though I think I'm productive in class, I don't do as much work as I should at home. I know I'm a huge procrastinator; I've learned that over the years, and although I try to stop, I know it's something I'm going to need to work on a lot more. I think because I'm not forced to do homework in Latin it made me feel like I wasn't obligated to do any. I get so much of my work done in class that when I get home, I don't do any more Latin becuase I already did so much during school. From last year, I also learned that I really don't like homework, like most kids. However, mixing that with the fact I procrastonate so much makes it so that I do the minimum amount of homework possible. Next year, when I'm required to do actual homework in Latin, I know I'm definetly going to do it and do it on time, but again, I know I'm going to wait until the last minute to do it, which is what I learned about myself from this year.
______________________________________________________________________

How I see my life connecting to Ancient Romans and this 'dead' language

______________________________________________________________________
I knew I wanted to take Latin to help me with my vocabulary andpotentially help me on my SAT's when I take them. However, I never knew how alive a 'dead' language could be. Some many English words are derrived from Latin, and taking Latin has helped me see just how many words that I use everyday come from Latin. Words that I didn't really know the meaning of before I can now understand better after taking Latin and learning key vocab words. For example, before last year, I actually never really knew what the word 'egotistical' meant. I had obviously heard the word before, and I probablycould have used it in a sentence, but I never truely understood what it meant. Then, when I had to do a Word Study and saw the word 'egotistical' in it, and how 'ego' was apart of the word, I better understood what that word meant. It was really interesting to see what words I could better understand after taking Latin, and to my surprise, I started to be able to depict certain words and find Latin roots in them. Even thought Latin is a 'dead' language, the words are very much alive in English today. I see myself expanding my vocabulary even farther with this language, words that a lot of my peers won't know, and that a lot of my teachers wouldn't expect me to know. We can learn a lot about the English language by really taking a look at Latin, the basis of most of our vocabulary.
______________________________________________________________________
