In fact, he was gruesomely strangled. Friends of the wife find the wife's bird upstairs in its cage. The bird had also been strangled. The evidence was hidden so that there would be no evidence to point to Mrs. Wright as the murderer.  </div>]]></description>

The African American brownie group automatically hates the white brownie group. Only to find out that the white groups consists of special needs white children. A lack of communication and involvement between whites and blacks aids in discrimination; even if it is not intended to do so.  </div>]]></description>

Yet, "I" does not refer to Hughes; it refers to every member of the African American community. Hughes is proud of his heritage and encourages other African Americans to be proud too. <br>"<strong>I</strong> am a Negro<br>Black as the night is black<br>Black like the depths of <strong>my</strong> Africa" (Hughes 928). </div>]]></description>

O'Brien has said that the entire story was fiction and was not based on actual events, but the reader can't help but think otherwise.
