         <description><![CDATA[<div>Whenever we read, we <strong>annotate </strong>(make notes in the text) to help us pay attention to what we’re reading and respond to the text. You can also make up your own notes that make sense for your brain! </div><div><br></div><ul><li><strong>C</strong> = character (meet a new character, start to notice a character’s traits, learn something new about a character, character changes)</li><li><strong>S</strong> = setting </li><li><strong>Circle</strong> = around any words you don’t know</li><li><strong>Underline</strong> = something that feels important! (new event in the text, dramatic event...)</li></ul><div><strong><em>Anything else you want!</em></strong> “Lol” at funny parts, “!!!” to react, questions as you read…. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>These are the parts of a strong paragraph response in middle school.<br><br><strong>Topic Sentence:</strong> Restate the question and say your answer/opinion right at the beginning of your paragraph!<br><br><strong>Context:</strong> this is the "WHO" and the "WHEN" of your evidence. You include context BEFORE you cite your evidence. This might sound like, "According to the text,..." or "When _____, she/he says,..." <br><br><strong>Evidence: </strong>Cite QUOTES from the text. Make sure to include "quotation marks" around the evidence!<br><br><strong>Analysis/elaboration: </strong>This is where you explain HOW your evidence actually proves your claim. <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Figurative language is when authors pick their words on purpose (they pick specific words) to make us feel some type of way when we read the text. <br><br><strong>Types of figurative language</strong> </div><ul><li><strong><mark>Simile</mark></strong><strong> </strong>(uses “like” or “as”)  </li><li><em>Example of a simile</em>: He ran as fast <strong>as</strong> a cheetah.</li><li><em>Example of a simile: </em>The snowball hit my arm <strong>like</strong> a rock. </li><li><strong><mark>Metaphor</mark></strong></li><li><em>Example of a metaphor</em>: All that anger was eating me up inside.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Myth</strong> = an old traditional story (often has magic or things that are not possible in real life, such as talking animals) that teaches a life lesson<br><br><strong>Divine loophole</strong> = divine means religious, and a "loophole" is a way out of a trap, like a CHEAT CODE or hack.<br><br><strong>Monomyth</strong> = "one myth" - when we see the same story about a hero going on an adventure or quest again and again in lots of cultures, time periods, movies, and books. It always follows certain patterns (like having a hero and a "bad guy") <br><br><strong>Dharma</strong> = rules of behavior (doing the right thing) based on your age/place in the world <br><br><strong>Karma</strong> = “what goes around, comes around” - there are consequences for your actions! <br><br><strong>Archetype </strong>= character type that comes up again and again in lots of stories and movies (example = hero, or "bad guy") <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

(Remember this by thinking - EVIL has a "V" in it - so does Ravana!) <strong>Ravana is the VILLAIN/bad guy!</strong><br><br><strong>Rama/Vishnu</strong> = Vishnu is a god who decided to be reincarnated, or reborn, on Earth as a human prince named Rama so he can defeat Ravana. <strong>Rama is the hero/GOOD guy!</strong></div>]]></description>

She is waiting for Odysseus back in Ithaca.<br><br><strong>Telemachus</strong> = the hero's son! He was just a baby when Odysseus left, but he is growing up while Odysseus tries to go back home.<br><br><strong>Zeus </strong>= the head of all the gods.<br><br><strong>Poseidon</strong> = the god that controls the oceans. In this story, he is the shadow/bad guy - he keeps Odysseus from sailing back home.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Hubris</strong>: being so proud that you are arrogant /bragging/being obnoxious.</div><div><br><em>Example</em>: “Because of his hubris, he did not do any warm ups before the big game, but then he broke his ankle in the first quarter.”<br><br><strong>Humility:</strong> showing modesty - the opposite of hubris. When you are not rude/arrogant about what you can do, but polite. You don't go over the top bragging - you show respect. </div>]]></description>
