In this demanding environment, Moving History© provides concrete steps toward social justice by engaging students in a kinetic, American history education program which centers the experiences and contributions of African-Americans, leading to increased self esteem and problem-solving abilities, as well as critical thinking, collaboration, and teamwork skills for all students.

Mr. Clinton White, M.F.A., M.A.Ed.. is an educator, visual storyteller, and advocate for arts integration as a means of providing meaningful access for k-12 students of all backgrounds. He first studied photography from a vocational perspective but became passionate about the transformative power of photography on identity and reality whilst studying post-structuralist philosophy at Gonzaga University. His interest led him to pursue his first postgraduate degree in “The Photographic image” at Durham University in the United Kingdom. There he investigated the employment of photography in NGOs marketing campaigns and the diminishing effects of marketing caused by compassion fatigue. After completing his MFA in Photography, He returned to the US and built a successful photography business focusing on lifestyle photography.

After seven years as a practicing photographer and artistic entrepreneur, Mr. White recalibrated his professional paradigm back towards photography as a tool of transformation by becoming a full-time educator. Starting as an ELA teacher at Cesar Chavez Public Charter School in Washington DC’s Ward 7, Mr. White championed the use of project based learning and visual literacy as an access point to ELA for high school scholars to engage in literature. In 2022, Mr. White built and taught a curriculum for Black & White photography incorporating elements of ELA, History, Math, Science, Art, and Social Emotional Learning. This included Cesar Chavez’s first ever scholar-produced yearbook and expanded their spring art showcase to include photography. He also served as the electives department chair for the 24-25 school year.

Mr. White’s enthusiasm for creating a meaningful space for arts integration in the classroom has created further collaborations, including the BOWS and REACH grants from the PAInT Center at the University of South Florida, in which he has participated in activities such as museum studies, think tanks, and summer institutes.

Something that I love about project based learning, is the integration between the arts that they love and mix it with academics and civics for a better understanding. An example that highlighted this when I was a student at The SAE, was a performance where students had to write their own songs that followed either current events, or historical moments in the past.

This project culminated with a live performance where all of the groups showcased the songs they wrote. (Including a picture of high school Alyssa from that performance in 2014 at The SAE ☀️)

Excited to learn more over the next few days. Thank you for having us!

As an SEL teacher, I love the ideas of connecting, identity, and diversity, and I can’t wait to see how I can use various art forms to get my students to value these ideas as well. I’m also intrigued to see this can work with all grade levels within and elementary school!

So what I have got from this is anyone can want or have something to say as long as they do it with great expectations. Professor Marshall made it plain that if you make a argument and give reasons why this should be then you are letting your argument be heard. I think this tool was great. Im going to present this to my 3rd grader not to promote argument, but as a way to get them heard.

The intersection of arts and civics is such a great gap to bridge because there are so many easy options especially in my field, theater.

I have so many students who have seen “The Sound of Music” but didn’t understand the climate of the show and how it changes the stakes. Learning about the Holocaust by relating to these characters makes the students find personal care and investment in the situation and then relating it to current events in the world is integral to bringing the students to a place where civil engagement is personal.

I found breaking down the picture into quarters interesting. While I like to look at all the details in an image or the topic being discussed, it can be overwhelming. Breaking down into sections can be useful for me personally and students in the classroom. I feel that applying to students will really help keep attention and see every detail that paints the whole image being seen.

He showed me how Art plays a significant role in influencing activism because Art often addresses social, political, and cultural issues, prompting the audience to think critically and engage in discussions about these topics. It can challenge beliefs and lead to powerful discussions.

From the struggles and triumphs of the 1400’s to the Civil Rights Movement to the contributions of African Americans in art, music, and literature, every moment felt like a lesson in resilience and empowerment. I can’t wait to facilitate discussions with my students to understand the significance of these historical events and their impact on our society today. I’ve begun brainstorming project ideas for them to use art to delve deeper into key figures and events. My goal is to empower my students to be agents of change. I hope learning about the struggles and achievements of African Americans will inspire them to stand up for justice and equality.

As educators we are there to teach and support our students in their learning. Through the Summer Immersive we were able to really breakdown our structures and see how important historical thinking is, and how a big focus needs to be on political literacy. Students need to be able to understand and analyze what they are reading no matter what subject they are in. Really creating lessons to improve and enhance critical literary skills will be a big part of curriculum. This will help students analyze and understand history and past events, and be able to understand and compare it to the real world.

From the start to end of this week, we were asked to share what we think we will take from this experience. I honestly was surprised with how much information we learned and the number opportunity’s we had to work hands on with activities along with collaboration with every person that attended. I look forward to integrating the digital platforms with students such as the Smithsonian Learning lab and The Juice. In additionally, I find myself checking Juice since it has been introduced to see the different types of articles the students will be reading when the school year begins.

Our group work brainstormed ideas for teachers that are not enrichment teachers. We discussed getting students to register to vote, collaborating on a black history lesson where Emma's students will draw pictures. Then, Asia, would use the student art work to teach her elementary students about black history. Overall, our goals are to enhance our students' confidence and speaker skills, showcase their artwork, and promote student led projects using civic engagement.

It also encourages students to creatively express their needs as individuals in their communities. The integration of the arts and civic learning will foster students' ability to think about community, social justice, and what it takes to work towards change.

I plan to utilize The Juice and Smithsonian Lab as a tool to introduce primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. I cannot wait to mimic the monument lesson presented by Moving History, while also incorporating my own original ideas. Overall, this year's Summer Immersive Institute exceeded my expectations; It was truly an enriching professional development opportunity. I am overflown with ideas and looking forward to incorporated all the new knowledge acquired.
