The subject and the author’s connection is conveyed through imagery and diction. The meaning of this is to give the reader the sense of what’s going on in the situation. It helps the reader picture where characters are or what might happen next . On the page where it shows the sign “Jim Crow Rd” may convey that this has something to do with racism. The sign which contributes to a law, dealing with segregation and the picture in the back showing the fancy houses, with cars. Another image with a deer having a black face with sweat on it symboling some type of pressure or discomfort was applied among the character.

This chapter combines lots of racist interactions followed by memories told in 2nd person, giving the reader the experience to see them/understand it closely. As the reader progresses to read on, so does the strength of the negative feeling produced. Maybe why it would be difficult to tell if something said was racist or not. Like with the girl in school mistakenly accused a “black person” with being “white” because she cheated off of them and the way they smell, telling them they have “white people” features. This stands to show that “black people” are supposed to be the opposite of “white people” maybe dirty, stinking and stupid? Dosnt ring a bell about what “white people” say to “black people”?

Although some of these interactions may seem confusing and a misunderstanding but as you pay attention everything has a meaning and this is where diction comes in play. During the altercation with the specialist At first read the interactions seem to be simple misunderstandings. Perhaps a known friend to be mistaken for a stranger? frustrations incorrectly categorized as racial offenses? Or maybe just a big misunderstanding? But when you put all the interactions together, a reader can understand that many of the interactions deal with a type of racism that is harder to detect than other racial slurs.
