The biggest theme throughout this book is the crime of adultery. The Scarlet Letter was taken place in the 17th century so the act of adultery was very frowned upon. Hester Prynee, the women who committed adultery, was punished by being forced to wear the letter "A" on her clothing. The male that took place in the adultery was named Dimmesdale. Although it seems that Hester was the biggest sinner, it is actually Dimmesdale. He first disobeys the rules of his job, which is the puritan minister. And secondly, commits the crime of adultery with Hester, a women already married. Not admitting the truth that Dimmesdale is the father of Pearl, Hester's child, eats him up on the inside. Considering the fact that Dimmesdale is the puritan minister and he strongly believes in this, keeping it a secret that he is the father does not sit well with him.

Their love for eachother does not fade from the actions around them. Their devotion to one another keeps them strong.

The biggest symbol in this story is simply the letter A that Hester wears on her clothing. This "A" is supposed to represent sin and shame. Hester is forced to make the letter A to wear, but to not let this dictate her punishment, she makes it beautiful. As the story goes on, Hester builds her reputation and others start to believe that the letter A not longer stands for adultery, but for able.

Throughout life in the 17th century many of the puritans believed that anything with less regularity of the rise and set of the sun and moon were considered warnings from God. The first time that Hester, Dimmesdale, and Pearl show signs of being a family there is a meteor in the sky, or a sign from God. Dimmesdale sees this meteor and describes it as the letter A in a dull red light. He expresses it as God knowing of his sin and trying to expose him. The towns people also see this meteor, but interpret it differently. Also seeing the letter A they interpret this as "angel" for the Governor who recently passed.
