Where I'm From I am from clothespins,
from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride.
I am from the dirt under the back porch. (Black, glistening,
it tasted like beets.)
I am from the forsythia bush
the Dutch elm
whose long-gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.

I'm from fudge and eyeglasses,
from Imogene and Alafair.
I'm from the know-it-alls
and the pass-it-ons,
from Perk up!
and Pipe down!
I'm from He restoreth my soul
with a cottonball lamb
and ten verses I can say myself.

I'm from Artemus and Billie's Branch, fried corn and strong coffee.
From the finger my grandfather lost to the auger,
the eye my father shut to keep his sight. Under my bed was a dress box
spilling old pictures,
a sift of lost faces
to drift beneath my dreams.
I am from those moments---
snapped before I budded---
leaf-fall from the family tree.

Where the smell is fresh
The sound is kinda quiet.
It's noisy sometimes .
The voices of the people are quiet.
They hush. They whisper.
My people are nice.
They are warm and kind.

San Bernadino.

At night a hear a lot of cars passing by.
My family cooks
menudo or Pozole and tamales to celebrate.

And the music they hear is nortaña.

I miss the kids that I played with.
Fresh air floats through my house
and the smells of food.
My neighborhood has a lot of kids that play outside.

Sometimes, I go out to play, too.

Where I'm from is Chula Vista, California.
There is a sidewalk that has a big hill
With a bumpy street
There are no kids
To play with me

Unlike my other neighborhood
I had people to play with me
Like tag, hide and seek, etc.

When I go to sleep
What I hear are dogs howling,
and planes flying
Also on the 4th of July my family goes and buys oysters to eat them.

The music that floats through our home is
Church music every Sunday
so we can eat pancakes.

The persons I miss are my two nephews and my brother because they were the only people I had fun with.

But I have known many like you before.
Always feeling correct in your assumptions.
You assume wrongly.

Take away your misguided assumptions.
Leave me alone and do not try,
To make me fit into your view of me.
You do not see me.
You see what I want you to see.

In the process,
my dreams and aspirations
are often mistaken for ambition,
Thought of as a desire for fame and fortune as a measure of my success in life.
Wrong thinking again,
My success comes from the doing,
Not the material things by which society measures success.

We love it here.

It reminds us of home.

All of the schools are really close to our home.

My grandpa fought in the Vietnam war.
He had barely made it back to us.
