What did it do?
The Quartering Acts were two British Laws, passed by the Parliament of Great Britain 1765 and 1774, that were designed to force local colonial governments to provide provisions and housing to British soldiers stationed in the 13 Colonies of America. The 1765 Quartering Act made provisions for British troops to be given food and shelter at the expense of the American colonists.
Colonial Response
Disputed the legality of this Act because it seemed to violate the Bill of Rights of 1689, which forbid taxation without representation and the raising or keeping a standing army without the consent of Parliament. The colonists wondered why the British troops remained in North America after the French had been defeated. Widespread refusal to comply!

What did it do?:
- The Quebec Act was designed to extend the boundaries of Quebec and guaranteed religious freedom to the Catholic Canadians
- The fifth act, the Quebec Act, included in the laws referred to as the Intolerable Acts, was not related to the punishment of Boston. It related to the expansion of the Province of Quebec and was seen as an additional threat to the liberty and expansion of the colonies.
Colonial Response
Angry because it limited opportunities for colonies to expand on their western frontiers and deprived them of their rights to land in that region

- This act suspended the colony of Massachusetts right to self-govern by allowing the appointed Military Governor to send rebellious colonists to other colonies or back to Britain to go on trial
- this was used to punish the colonists in Boston for the Boston Tea Party
Colonial Response
Following the Act, the other colonies sympathized with Massachusetts and many protests and boycotts were held. This caused a huge division among delegates and politicians at the time. The colonists knew what happened in Massachusetts could happen anywhere.
