Christopher Columbus returns to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and unloaded seventeen ships that held 1,200 men, cattle, swine, sugarcane, and horses. The animals spread quickly in the new land, traveling through Mexico to reach Canada. Horses were used as a mode of transportation for the Native Americas, allowing them to convert from "newly mounted cultures into highly mobile, wide-ranging hunter-warrior societies" that resided in the Great Plains in an effort to pursue buffalo (page 14). Sugarcane also grew in abundance in the climate of the Caribbean. Diseases were also brought to the Americas by the Europeans, devastating Native American populations.
