By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Define non-verbal communication and its types.

2. Recognize the importance of non-verbal cues in human interaction.

3. Identify different types of non-verbal communication (e.g., facial expressions, body language, eye contact, posture, gestures).

4. Understand cultural differences in non-verbal communication.

5. Analyze a communication scenario and identify non-verbal signals.

Activity 1 : Watch two short videos that covers the types of non-verbal communication.

Activity 2 : Definitions (using canva presentation)

• Watch the powerpoint presentation which includes definitions as well as links to videos.

• Use an online google form to discuss the contents of the video and answer the following questions:

• List at least 5 types of non-verbal communication mentioned in the video.

• For each type, provide a real-life example where that form of communication is used.

Activity 3: Reading

• Objective: To understand how non-verbal communication can vary across cultures.

• Instructions:

  • Read an article on cultural differences in non-verbal communication. (LaFrance, M. and Mayo, C., 1978. Cultural aspects of nonverbal communication. International Journal of Intercultural Relations, 2(1), pp.71-89.)

  • With knowledge from their research and reading students should answer the following questions.

  • Questions:

    1. What are some non-verbal communication differences between cultures you found surprising?

    2. How might cultural misunderstandings occur due to non-verbal cues?

    3. How can understanding these differences improve communication in global contexts?

• View a series of images that depict a conversation or interaction.

• Analyze the non-verbal cues used in the images.

  • What does the body language suggest about the emotions or intentions of the participants?

  • How does posture, facial expression, or eye contact affect the interaction?

Activity 5: Final Reflection & Quiz

• Objective: To consolidate learning and reflect on key concepts.

• Instructions:

  • Take a final quiz on non-verbal communication to assess understanding of the lesson content. (Google Forms, Quizlet, etc.)

  • Create a poster on your understanding of non-verbal communication after this lesson.

• Discussion Forum: Students can view the images and post answers onto the group Padlet allowing for group discussion.

• Students may debate various opinions or interpretations of the topic.
