Description below:

TRUE BIZ (adj./exclamation; American Sign Language): really, seriously, definitely, real-talk

True biz? The students at the River Valley School for the Deaf just want to hook up, pass their history finals, and have politicians, doctors, and their parents stop telling them what to do with their bodies. This revelatory novel plunges readers into the halls of a residential school for the deaf, where they'll meet Charlie, a rebellious transfer student who's never met another deaf person before; Austin, the school's golden boy, whose world is rocked when his baby sister is born hearing; and February, the headmistress, who is fighting to keep her school open and her marriage intact, but might not be able to do both. As a series of crises both personal and political threaten to unravel each of them, Charlie, Austin, and February find their lives inextricable from one another's—and changed forever.

This is a story of sign language and lip-reading, disability and civil rights, isolation and injustice, first love and loss, and, above all, great persistence, daring, and joy. Absorbing and assured, idiosyncratic and relatable, this is an unforgettable journey into the Deaf community and a universal celebration of human connection.

CONTENT WARNINGS: injury/injury detail, ableism, medical trauma, death of a parent. Mentoring has been reported to be one of the most effective components in improving retention, graduation rates, and success in STEM careers. Additionally, mentors can assist their mentees with building their self-esteem and science identity, expose them to resources and opportunities, and much more. Unfortunately, many students are unaware of the importance of mentoring, how to identify mentors, and maintain meaningful relationships. The purpose of this session is to provide students with tips and strategies that will guide them through the process of identifying mentors that will help them succeed in STEM.

At the Convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights held in Chicago in March 1955, Dr. King declared: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhumane.” In a 1961 annual report entitled “Equality Now: The President Has the Power,” Dr. King called attention to “a considerable amount of discrimination” with regard to health and hospitalization. Consistent with what we might today describe as an antiracist stance, Dr. King influenced the fields of medicine and public health by being among the voices to suggest and champion specific changes in programs and policies that could reduce racial inequity in social determinants of health and health more broadly. This panel of WashU Medicine leaders will reflect on how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s Legacy has impacted their practice as leaders in medicine and/or biomedical science.

Refreshments will be provided.

Panelists include:

Eva Aagaard, MD
Carol B. and Jerome T.

Jun 24 - 28, 2024

Providence, Rhode Island

The Queer in Computational and Applied Mathematics (QCAM) workshop will be the first workshop to celebrate research advances and foster stronger research networks of LGBTQIA+ mathematicians specializing in computational and applied mathematics. Goals of QCAM are to support LGBTQIA+ academics through mentoring and research opportunities, as well as providing a safe space for researchers across the subfields of computational and applied mathematics to connect, collaborate, and build support networks within the field. In addition, QCAM intends to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in mathematics pertaining to LGBTQIA+ people, especially those with intersectional identities. This conference will be open to all and will ideally engage the wider mathematical audience of LGBTQIA+ allies to develop a community of support.

The scientific program will have invited speakers and contributed sessions that span the field of computational mathematics, with a planned focus on research in computational methods which may include the following fields:

- Mathematical Biology, Ecology, Epidemiology, and/or Oncology;

- Fluids, Materials, and/or Mathematical Physics;

- Data Science;

- Numerical Analysis and Computational Science; and

- Applied Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Geometry, and/or Topology.

These general frameworks will be the basis for the creation of working groups during the conference. In these working groups, QCAM participants will be invited to develop supportive and collaborative research networks with other participants of differing career stages. Furthermore, QCAM will include programming that is dedicated within the LGBTQIA+ community and at the intersection with other underrepresented groups, as well issues pertaining to the leaky STEM pipeline for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Application Information

ICERM welcomes applications from faculty, postdocs, graduate students, industry scientists, and other researchers who wish to participate.
Perspectives: Honoring the Memory of Mike Brown

Join us for a reflective session on August 27th as we honor the memory of Mike Brown and discuss the progress and challenges in achieving racial equity in the region. Register here to participate in this important conversation.

On Friday, August 9, we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the murder of Michael Brown, Jr. and the Ferguson Uprising. The impact of his killing and the uprising created unimaginable pain and loss. It also fueled a significant movement for racial justice across the St. Louis region and nationally. From the Ferguson Commission Report to Forward Through Ferguson and the Black Lives Matter movement, a vision and a roadmap for achieving racial justice was created. The impact of August 9, 2014, on the St. Louis region, the country, and the world cannot be overstated, and we encourage you to take time to consider both the pain and growth, the loss, and the commitment to change that came as a result. Since then, we have seen clear evidence of the work that remains. We mourn the loss of numerous unarmed Black people that have been killed since 2014, from George Floyd in 2020 to Sonya Massey only a few weeks ago. We lean on the wise words of our community leaders that the only way forward is through. We commit to keep going.

Washington University School of Medicine was greatly impacted and has continued to grow and change in our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion since the summer of 2014. We are deeply grateful to our partners across campus who have helped to advance all aspects of our work, specifically those who have helped advance our racial equity work through our Understanding Systemic Racism curriculum and our Equity Champions program. Among the most important messages the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion wants to share about the work for equity and justice is that its foundation is relationships. We at Washington University School of Medicine have a responsibility to know and be a part of the communities we serve.

Therefore, in honor of Michael Brown, Jr.’s death and the Ferguson Uprising, we are providing a list of community events to support, resources to advance your understanding around systemic racism, and an invitation to join us on our journey to dismantle systemic racism in all its forms on our campus. We invite you to a Special Perspectives session on August 27th to reflect on where we are 10 years later. We thank you in advance for the actions you take and remind you that you are not alone, and that this work must advance in community. We commit to keep going together.

Objectives of the session include:

Reflecting on the state of racial equity in the region since the death of Mike Brown.

Discussing the Ferguson Commission and Forward Through Ferguson reports on racial equity progress in the region.

Examining changes in WUSM policy and culture in the last ten years.

Registration Link: https://wustl-hipaa.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYpcu6qqT8qHtScWeSJEQqm_58XqN_5Pv4x#/registration

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all Washington University School of Medicine-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires reasonable accommodation to participate in this event at least one week before the event, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Washington University School of Medicine Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in advance at 314-273-2809 or MedDEI@wustl.edu

NPA Accessibility & Inclusion Equity Summit

Through a series of interactive online sessions led by the NPA, the summit seeks to identify barriers – and find paths forward – to greater accessibility and inclusion across the postdoctoral communities. Areas of focus include accessibility and inclusion for individuals with (in)visible disabilities and neurodiverse individuals that allow them to thrive in their postdoctoral work and beyond. Roundtable discussions are currently planned on a variety of topics of interest to the postdoctoral communities featuring postdoctoral researchers and invited representatives from government, industry, nonprofits, and academia.

This summit is designed to shine a spotlight on the barriers that can inhibit full accessibility within the postdoctoral community as well as pathways to increase accessibility and inclusion. The summit amplifies messaging from the lived experiences of neurodiverse individuals or people with disabilities that many in the postdoctoral space may be unfamiliar with. It is the hope of the NPA and its allies that these conversations will lead to further discussions about specific issues and actions toward achieving justice and equity for everyone in the postdoctoral communities.

The Summit will include American Sign Language (ASL) translation services throughout the event.

Celebrate the Jewish High Holy Days!

(Posted here 10/04/2024)

Rosh Hashanah (October 3-4) is quickly approaching, followed by Yom Kippur (October 12). As these important holidays draw near, it's a great opportunity to reflect on how we can better support our Jewish colleagues and friends. By offering religious accommodations and being mindful of scheduling, we can take simple yet meaningful steps to foster a more inclusive and respectful community.

SIX ACTION STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO SUPPORT YOUR JEWISH COLLEAGUES & FRIENDS:
Written by Elisa Glick, PhD

1. Respect Religious Observances:
Build a belonging culture by NOT scheduling important, community-wide events on the High Holidays!

2. Accommodate Religious Needs:
Offer reasonable accommodations for religious observance of the High Holidays. Remember, all Jewish holidays start at sundown.

3. Stay Up-to-Date on Holidays:
Use an updated interfaith/world religious calendar since many holidays are not on the same day every year (unlike Christmas). For example, the Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist calendars are all lunisolar. You can review WashU’s interfaith calendar here.

4. Invite Open Dialogue:
Invite individuals of all religions to share their own needs. Jewish people observe the holidays in different ways. For example, Rosh Hashanah is two days, but many people (including me) observe only one day.

5. Support Student Observance:
Schools and colleges should allow students to be absent to observe religious holidays without penalty. As a reminder, this is in alignment with WashU’s Religious Holiday Class Absence Policy.

6. Provide Extra Time for Students:
Instructors should give students additional time to make up work or exams. This, also, is in alignment with WashU’s Religious Holiday Class Absence Policy.

Read more on her blog at https://elisaglick.com/blogtest/the-high-holidays-jewish-identity-and-belonging-at-work.

National Coming Out Day 2024: Celebrating Authenticity, Challenging Stereotypes, and Promoting Inclusion

National Coming Out Day (October 11, 2024) is an annual observance that celebrates and supports individuals in the LGBTQ+ community as they share their authentic selves with the world. This day raises awareness about the significance of coming out, challenges stereotypes and prejudices, and promotes acceptance and inclusion.

“Coming Out” vs. “Inviting In”

adapted from the Human Rights Campaign

“Coming Out” has been the common term for someone who acknowledges being LGBTQ+ and it is used throughout many resources on and for LGBTQIA+ people. However, it is important to note that this language centers the persons individuals are coming out to rather than LGBTQIA+ people. It gives the impression that people who don’t identify as cisgender or heterosexual are hiding something from society, rather than acknowledging how homophobia and transphobia create an unwelcoming environment. When publicly identifying as LGBTQ+, individuals are inviting people into a part of their life, and that should be protected and celebrated. No one is asking for permission to be themselves. Individuals control their own narrative, and who and what they allow into their life. You can read more at https://www.hrc.org/campaigns/national-coming-out-day.

You can read more here: https://www.hrc.org/campaigns/national-coming-out-day.

OUTmed Welcome Event

Join us for a beginning-of-the-year LGBTQIA+ mixer for all faculty, staff, and trainees at Washington University School of Medicine! Plus ones, friends, and allies are welcome. Last year we had about 100 participants—let’s make it even bigger this year! Enjoy catered food, drinks, networking, and a great time.

Date: Thursday, October 10, 2024

Time: 6:00–8:00 PM

Location: Dr. De Fer’s house (address will be sent via calendar invite upon RSVP)

RSVP: Please RSVP by 10/4/2024 to receive the address.
