In 1633 the Colonists started to expand their land and with this expansion they started to run into Native conflict. This sparked conflict with the Pequot tribe because the Colonist started to take there livestock, crops, and property. Tensions kept rising between the two parties especially after the Pequot leader, Sassacus, was murdered. With his death the war was ended rather fast. The Pequot Tribe had lost.

By September 21 of 1638 the war was over and the Treaty of Hartford was made. The treaty states, "It is agreed and a conclusion of pieces and friendships made between the Miantinome and the said Narraganfsetts and the said Pequots and said Moheavins as longas they carry themselves orderly and gives no just" ( Yale Univeristy)

Carter Harrison & Grace Fisher.

The Roanoke Colony was an attempt by Queen Elisabeth the First to establish a colony in North America. In 1586, the current colonists abandoned the settlement, prompting Sir Walter Raleigh to recruit more people with the goal of creating a more permanent settlement. He left behind 117 men, women, and children. When he returned in, 1590, he found the entire settlement deserted, with only the word "Croatoan" carved into a nearby tree.

First Hand:
"But we found no such signe of distresse. And having well considered of this, we passed toward the place where they were left in sundry houses, but we found the houses taken downe, and the place very strongly enclosed with a high palisado of great trees, with cortynes and flankers very Fort-like, and one of the chiefe trees or postes at the right side of the entrance had the barke taken off, and 5 foote from the ground in fayre Capitall letters was graven CROATOAN without any crosse or signe of distresse." - M. John White, August 1590

Second Hand:
"Now, two independent teams have found archaeological remains suggesting that at least some of the Roanoke colonists might have survived and split into two groups, each of which assimilated itself into a different Native American community."

Modern Day Connections:
In the Roanoke Colony Sir Walter Raleigh tried recruited people in order to make the colony more permeant. Cities try to do this today by offering "perks".

Tisquantum (Squanto) was a Native American, part of the Patuxet tribe. In 1914 he was abducted by English explorer, Thomas Hunt and was brought to England. In 1619 he escaped back to America and became an interpreter for the Patuxet people. He was one of the only Native Americans who could fluently speak with the Colonists. This granted him power amongst his people.

(Note: Some sources claim he was taken to Spain, others England. Due to Thomas Hunt being an extremely English name, I am assuming he took Squanto to England. Some sources claim he was taken, others claim he went willingly. I subscribe to the belief that he was abducted.)

"...A special instrument sent of God for their good beyond expectation." -Governor William Bradford

"Speaking English, American Indian, Tisquantum or Squanto, taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn, catch eels and where to look for lobster." -Douglas Rickard.

If the Pequot had a figure such as Squanto perhaps the Pequot war would not have broken out. There was a lot of misunderstanding, a lot of conflict due to a lack of communication.

Translators have always been extremely valuable, and they always will be. They allow passage into another community, another world. Today translation is everything, it's what allows the UN to create peace.

1.King Philip’s war was started in 1675 and ended in 1676. The indian tribes Wampanoag, Nipmuck, Pocumtuck and Narragansett were involved. It was a war that had no fronts it was just random attacks. Settlers arrived in New England where they planned to make their new home. The Indians were very much against this and would constantly attack their settlement. They were hoping this would force them to leave the land.

2.

3. “These fierce natives,” says he, “are now so furnished with guns and muskets, and are so skilled in them, that they keep the English in awe, and give the law to them when they please; and of powder and shot they have such abundance that sometimes they refuse to buy more. Flints, screw-plates, and moulds for all sorts of shot they have, and skill how to use them. They can mend and new stock their pieces as well, almost, as an Englishman.”

4.“King Philip’s War (1675-1676) marked the last major effort by the Native Americans of southern New England to drive out the English settlers”.

5. I connected this to Squanto's story because he was the one who taught the settlers how to live on American soil. That obviously didn’t end well for the natives because it just gave the settlers more power and the rivalry began.

6. In King Philip’s war they fought for the right to settle in New England. Even though this event took place a very long time ago, we can still see some similarities. Recently we have seen the U.S head to the Middle East to fight for the oil rigs. Instead of fighting for land/settlement we are fighting for money. The fighting is still going on and the last American Indian war was less than 100 years ago.
