The Japanese Occupation did bring changes to the lives of teenagers. Before the Japanese occupation, it was peaceful everyday and people had the freedom to do what they want. During the Japanese occupation, teenagers lived in an unsafe area , where they could get killed any moment. They also had no freedom as they had to follow the Japanese and their orders. They needed to bow to them whenever they saw them or they may get tortured or killed by the Japanese. 
Before the Japanese occupation, the teenagers had a relaxed life, they could study and play, doing what they want. They also were able to eat simple dishes everyday without fail. However, during the Japanese occupation, the teenagers lived in hardship. They had to help their families survive by planting food to eat or sell. Food was scarce unlike before where there were a lot and it can be easily bought with cheap prices. They also rarely had time to study. Most of them studied in the morning, and went to find fruits or food to sell so that their family could survive. Teenagers also live in fear everyday during the Japanese occupation. People, like their parents were taken by the Japanese and got tortured by them daily. They lived in constant fear and sufferings. Therefore, teenagers lived in fear, hardship before the Japanese occupation. One of the changes would be food shortage. Before the Japanese Occupation, Singaporeans have enough food to survive and were not scared if one day they ran out of food. During the Japanese Occupation, everything changed. The people, which includes the elderly and teenagers, were all suffering from shortage of food and the teenagers were maturing at that point of time and were growing rapidly so they must have enough food in order to help them grow. The evidence is " The average family lived on a diet of broken rice made into porridge - with sweet potato or tapioca to make it more filing- a few fragments of salt fish an or ikan bilis." This shows that the teenagers had a lack of food because they had to use little rice to cook porridge for the whole family and only salted fish and ikan bilis for dishes. The second evidence is " In school fields, children tend to vegetable plots. The locals are encouraged to plant their own food and be self-sufficient." This shows that the teenagers led a poor life as they have no money to buy the vegetables that they are encouraged to grow by themselves. But after they are under the Japanese rules, their lives have changed. They have to obey and follow what the Japanese told them to do. If they don't follow, the Japanese will punish them. During the Japanese Occupation, it was dangerous as there was war going on and there were a lot of bombs dropping in certain countries. The Japanese brought hardships to people. There was also food shortage as the food was limited and also, there was a shortage of medicine and medical supplies. Due to shortage of all these medicine, a lot of people suffered and died during that time. Most of them also didn't have house to stay in as all their houses were all destroyed during war. They also needed to bow whenever they met a Japanese soldier. If they don't do so, there will be repercussions. Compared to the conditions before Japanese Occupation, it was very different from the times during the Japanese Occupation. People had a harsh lives during the Japanese Occupation as the Japanese brought a lot of changes in.

Before the Japanese Occupation, teenagers were required to go to school and increase their knowledge with their own specific language. But after the Japanese Occupation, Teenagers were still required to go to school, but they were forced to learn the Japanese and sang the Japanese National song. At the start of of the day, teenagers needed to bow 90 degree toward the North-East as that was the direction of the Japanese Emperor in Tokyo. Their teachers had changed to Japanese teacher and they would teach them basic Japanese words. Sometimes the teacher would give them some comic books which were talked about the Japanese soldier giving things to people in order to brainwash the teenagers and make them to think Japanese were good to Singapore.
Whenever the teenagers saw the Japanese soldier, they would need to bow 90 degree to show their respect and loyalty to the Japanese, as they thought to themselves were representing the Japanese Emperor. If people do not bow to them, it shows that they do not respect the Japanese Emperor. 
Then after the Japanese Occupation, the teenagers who had suffered from the war, they consumed their time to learn the Japanese language. When the war ended, they already too old to go back the school again, so they needed to look for a job for their survival.
