The Romans were masters at harnessing the environment to create many things, especially roads. The environment played a great role in creating roads, and the process of constructing them. For example, the construction of roads required huge land excavation, including destroying massive sections of land to smooth it out for roads. Even though there were a lot of negative outcomes from building roads, there were benefits, as well. The gravel held huge importance to the process of creating roads. Because of the gravel below the roads, the Roman roads were able to resist freezing, as well as floods, and due to this, required very little maintenance.

With all that, they were able to create more roads, and, in turn, transport more, boosting the economy. As well as increasing the economy, the roads made it possible for the social aspects of Romans. They were able to visit more people, and increase trades. As well as increasing trades, they increased communication between cities, and the governments of those cities, giving sway to the liking of politics.

The mills shaped Roman civilization in many ways. For example, the mills increased the more advanced methods of using the environment to create necessary elements of shaping civilizations.

Including environmental advancement, the mills created a huge boost in the crucial social structure of Rome. The mills employed hundreds of people, who got to know each other through their jobs. Economic advancement was also a huge result of mills. Because of the amount of jobs these mills supplied, many hundreds of people were paid each day. Not mentioned yet, is the fact that the resources they were producing boosted the economy greatly, as well. For example, they traded a lot of these materials. Traded caused Rome's economy to skyrocket, because of the money they were earning from these trades.

Weapons

The Romans used a variety of weapons on the battlefield. Spears, swords, bows. But the two strongest weapons were the ballista and the onager. The ballista was an artillery weapon that was basically two really big crossbows, holding 4 foot bolts with insanely good accuracy. The onager was a one-arm catapult that could launch 25 kilogram boulders at fortifications and swarms of enemy soldiers. This helped the the Romans by giving them an edge on the battlefield. Having portable catapults and giant crossbows will more than likely win them a battle.

This would help them economically, politically and socially, because the weapons give them a higher power over rivaling clans and other clans might want to ally with them, opening more trade and numbers.

The Romans were the first civilization to use advanced methods to mine for minerals. They used aqueducts constructed out of giant tanks. Water-powered machines such as stamp mills and trip hammers were used to break away hardened crust and even break open the first layer. They began heating up rocks then pouring water on it to cause a crack and expose valuable minerals. You can still find traces of these machines at the Las Medulas in Spain and Dolaucothi in Great Britain.

This helped them economically because it gave them a boost in precious goods which they could sell for higher prices. They could also create sharper or stronger weapons depending on what material they used.
