It helped me learn more about different topics that are included in the Iowa Core. I really enjoyed working with group members because it helped me work with others and learn from my classmates. Robert wanted to students to write to learn. They wrote about continents, animals, small wonders and magic machines, and Mother Nature's Tiny Wonders. They used the ABC's to choose what each student wrote about, each student got a topic that started with that letter. 
2. Students were encouraged not to worry about grammatical errors, spellings, etc. Robert wanted his students to learn more about the English language, so they would learn more about how to write and spell correctly. 
3. Students got to write their own (stated above) research papers and got to publish them and created a book out of everyone's from the class. This allowed students to become teachers because they are learning from each other's research. Students were able to learn more about the state-mandated subjects (science, mathematics, geography, history)
4. Students also were allowed to work together on some projects. Because of this, Robert, wanted to make sure that writing was fun and meaningful for them. Students were able to work on their own and able to choose what topic they got to research. Students were also able to work as a group and grow their conversation skills. Robert said within their research projects, there were some mistakes but the mistakes will eventually go away with the more practice they have with the English language. Students were also able to familiarize themselves with the different state mandated topics. He did this because he wanted his students to continue familiarizing themselves with the language and get more comfortable using it. He said he didn't worry about it because he knew that once they learn more about English, the mistakes will eventually go away. I know several times in first grade we would create class books. It was something that we all contributed our writing to and was something we made as a class. It helped us with our writing and reading. Robert knew that by allowing his students to work together, they can share ideas and learn more from one another. I knew that during my own schooling experience, I don't remember working as a group with my classmates as much. A lot of my schooling experience seems to have been individual-based which is unfortunate because I could have learned even more with my peers. Group work is great for students who are bilingual and may not know a lot of English. They can work on their conversation skills and feel more comfortable conversing with their classmates.
