During cultural celebrations, we ensure that children are exposed to the different vocabulary and cultural practices to that cultural celebrations through storybooks, or through sharing from parental involvement.

Principal 2:

I conduct lesson using differentiated instruction. We ask for additional help when we realised students are lacking behind academically.

Principal 8:

Through PAL lesson, CCE lesson, FTGP, we help students acquire social skills to interact with people of diverse backgrounds

We make use of spontaneous opportunities such as conflicts, or their everyday encounters to talk about social skills needed or can be acquired to interact effectively with students from other cultural or language groups.

No goodie bags/ lavish bday celebration
Instead of asking children to share their holiday experience, we get them to share “a good time with your family.”
Don’t pass down uniforms : sensitive to families values.

In my personal experience most of the time teachers are the ones who subtly instigate such disparities . There was a time when one child came to me and said all the big school students smoke because my teacher told so. Such biases should never be discussed in the class rooms but rather promote positive teaching and discussions

Including children who come from different countries to share something about their culture through show-and-tell

Including children with developmental needs

Use picture books to teach justice, eg treat people with respect and that each person is unique

I refused to give a parent the class name list as she wanted to do a customised gift for every child. The parent then went to each individual parent to get the name. As it was the first birthday of the year, the children started to expect presents. Some time in the middle of the year, One of the child did not give a gift bag and he was questioned by his friends why he wasn’t. I tried to address the situation in a child-friendly manner. It was an issue I brought up during my yearly meetings and last year, we stopped the “tradition” of giving gifts. Instead, we do something as a class instead.

Take home kits not only provide materials but are easily accessible to homes and ample time is given to do it. So that all chn can participate
