I find podcasts and video series to be more immersive storytelling mediums. They allow us to hear and see culture in a way that feels more involved than just engaging with a digital platform alone. As someone of Greek descent, the best way for me to connect with my culture is through experiences that make me feel truly immersed. For example, growing up watching movies about Greek ruins or different types of traditional Greek dancing gave me a deeper sense of connection. Seeing people’s passion firsthand was more engaging than just reading about it, which often felt distant. This method evoked stronger emotions and a greater sense of involvement.

Language is one of the key pieces that connects an individual to their culture so having these apps can help keep this aspect of culture alive. The great thing about apps is that almost everyone has a phone so essentially anyone can access these apps and learn about the language at any time.

One challenge that I can think of is, if there is no one to practice the language with outside of the app, it may be hard to improve.

Many languages are at risk of extinction due to globalization, migration, and cultural assimilation. Hence, these apps help maintain linguistic diversity and provide resources for future generations to learn and engage with their heritage languages.

Benefit: Indigenous communities and minority language speakers preserve their linguistic and cultural identity. Educators and researchers gain a valuable resource for studying and teaching these languages.

Accessibility: Mobile and web-based apps allow global access regardless of location.

This promotes knowledging sharing as it allows for many people to access the materials in it. For example, someone who does not know the stories of their own culture, this app might be able to give them access to those stories.

I think a key challenge would be authenticity. Unfortunately there could be people who want to sabotage the space and not write authentic stories.

I think this digital storytelling medium can effectively promote knowledge sharing because it is a very popular medium this days. Everyone gets their information or hears stories from either podcasts or online video platforms, so I think this is a good way that knowledge can be shared. This can benefit people who are very curious about different cultures or even their own culture. This can also benefit students who are learning about different cultures or stories. It can improve accessibility because this medium is a very popular and very powerful one in this generation. I think one of the major challenges that this medium can have is authenticity. A big problem with podcasts and videos online is that they are not always truthful and very often fabricated and false. It is hard to control what people can say and how they choose to use their platform.

For instance, I listen to podcasts while commuting and have gained valuable insights from others' shared experiences during traffic. Using video series in classrooms for storytelling is a highly inclusive teaching method, as it offers students both auditory and visual elements to enhance their understanding.

Challenges: Some podcast listeners may find it easy to become distracted, making it difficult for certain content to resonate with them. Language is a very important aspect of culture and it is very important to preserve it. A limitation is perhaps that learning language through an app is in my opinion much harder than learning it when embedded in a culture that speaks that language.

Many Indigenous cultures rely heavily on oral traditions. Digital storytelling provides a means to record and preserve these stories for future generations. It can also be seen as a way to revitalize language and stories. However, there are some risks of the stories being taken out of context or misused. Additionally, digital formats may not fully capture the richness and depth of traditional storytelling experiences. Finally, it could be seen as some type of intellectual property concern; there should be clear guidelines and protocols to ensure that Indigenous communities have control over their narratives.

I think podcasts and video series are a great way to engage in storytelling. I have been listening to many different podcasts and I feel as if that with an individual speaking about their experience it allows the listeners to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences. It also allows for others to engage with their experience with the widespread access of social media!

There are so many benefits in podcasts:

Story telling is an oral tradition and it allows the elders to share their own stories and experiences

Remote access: everyone can access the podcasts which allows for greater audience and to spread more awareness - this make learning more accessible

Podcasts allow for engagement for diverse learners especially those who are visual or auditory learners

Representation: it is important to have a platform that promotes self-representation that media might not

Cross cultural learning: these podcasts can be integrated in the educational sector for diverse learners especially when it comes to different strategies of learning.

How This Medium Promotes Knowledge Sharing

Last semester, I came across the All My Relations podcast and the Indigenous Ally Toolkit, both of which deepened my understanding of colonization's long-lasting impact on Indigenous communities. The podcast, featuring scholars like Carleton University professor Geraldine King, explores how the intergenerational trauma of residential schools has disrupted the ability to form and sustain meaningful relationships. Similarly, the Ally Toolkit provides educational resources to help challenge stereotypes and promote allyship.

Who Benefits?

Educators, allies, and policymakers gain critical insights into Indigenous histories and contemporary issues.

Indigenous communities see their lived experiences represented, contributing to a greater sense of visibility and validation.

How It Improves Accessibility?

Digital formats (audio and online text) make these resources widely available, helping bridge gaps in traditional education.

Multiple storytelling approaches (oral histories, research discussions, and practical guides) cater to different learning styles.

3.

I believe digital libraries are an effective medium for promoting knowledge sharing because they make cultural materials more accessible to a wider audience. For example, individuals who may not know the stories of their own culture can use a digital library to discover and learn about them. This can help preserve cultural identity and promote intergenerational knowledge transmission.

One key challenge is authenticity. Because digital libraries are open to many contributors, there is a risk that some users may share inauthentic or misleading stories. Ensuring quality and truthfulness while keeping the space open and inclusive is an ongoing challenge.
