I find podcasts and video series to be more immersive storytelling mediums. They allow us to hear and see culture in a way that feels more involved than just engaging with a digital platform alone. As someone of Greek descent, the best way for me to connect with my culture is through experiences that make me feel truly immersed. For example, growing up watching movies about Greek ruins or different types of traditional Greek dancing gave me a deeper sense of connection. Seeing people’s passion firsthand was more engaging than just reading about it, which often felt distant. This method evoked stronger emotions and a greater sense of involvement.

Language is one of the key pieces that connects an individual to their culture so having these apps can help keep this aspect of culture alive. The great thing about apps is that almost everyone has a phone so essentially anyone can access these apps and learn about the language at any time.

One challenge that I can think of is, if there is no one to practice the language with outside of the app, it may be hard to improve.

Everyone gets their information or hears stories from either podcasts or online video platforms, so I think this is a good way that knowledge can be shared. This can benefit people who are very curious about different cultures or even their own culture. This can also benefit students who are learning about different cultures or stories. It can improve accessibility because this medium is a very popular and very powerful one in this generation. I think one of the major challenges that this medium can have is authenticity. A big problem with podcasts and videos online is that they are not always truthful and very often fabricated and false. It is hard to control what people can say and how they choose to use their platform.

It is the easiest way for people to access and engage in. With a smartphone, it can be accessed anytime and anywhere. It has wide influence and it requires minimum effort compared to other medium like learning a language.
One challenges is ensuring authenticity, as misinformation can spread without credible sources, and accessibility, since lacking captions or translations can exclude some audiences. I believe that a language preserving app would be very beneficial in helping with knowledge transmission and protecting one’s culture. Language is a very important aspect of culture and it is very important to preserve it. I have been listening to many different podcasts and I feel as if that with an individual speaking about their experience it allows the listeners to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences. There are so many benefits in podcasts:

Story telling is an oral tradition and it allows the elders to share their own stories and experiences
Remote access: everyone can access the podcasts which allows for greater audience and to spread more awareness - this make learning more accessible
Podcasts allow for engagement for diverse learners especially those who are visual or auditory learners
Representation: it is important to have a platform that promotes self-representation that media might not
Cross cultural learning: these podcasts can be integrated in the educational sector for diverse learners especially when it comes to different strategies of learning.
