Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860. When he was elected the states in the south were outraged. They disliked the idea of having a Republican president. They were afraid that he would ban slavery. Then on December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union. Then in February of 1861 more southern states seceded and created the Confederate States of America. This was one of Lincoln's failures because he let them secede.

The Confederate States of America were unhappy because there were Union soldiers stationed at Fort Sumter in Confederate territory. The Confederates decided to surround the fort and keep the soldiers in the fort. Lincoln tried to send them food so they could survive. The Confederates thought it was an attempt to resupply the troops with weapons so they attacked the fort. This was another failure by Lincoln.
