Their land was not able to feed everyone so most of the men spent their life as warriors. They also used slaves, also known as helots. These poeple were surrounded and captured by the spartans during war and they let them live where they did but they had to give the majority of the food they made to the spartans. Spartans used heavy iron bars for a currency.

They traded honey, olive oil and silver. They would get in return grain and wood. Athens had a huge

market called agora. Had a system of currency of coins of gold, silver, and bronze. One side of the

coin had athena on it and the other an owl.
