A few things that went pear shaped for this company dated right back to the very beginning when the original founder Dick Smith himself mentioned that he initially set up shop to sell electronic components not consumer electronics. The new owners over time acquiring a huge amount of electronics that no one would buy (even at 90% off!) and creating a massive debt. Following on with this Dick Smith the store decided not to honour gift vouchers. Poor management and sales resulted in Dick Smith stores closing down and thousands losing their jobs both in Australia and New Zealand.

This resulted in Blockbusters going bankrupt in 2010. Netflix is now currently sitting at 148 million streaming subscribers worldwide. Netflix revenue for the twelve months ending December 31, 2018 was $15.794B, a 35.08% increase year-over-year

Within my work environment equipment must be of high quality for soldiers within the NZ Army. The pack (carry luggage) that is issued to all soldiers had minor defects or issues that were reported on over time. The decision was made to replace the pack with a new designed pack. The new pack (terminator) had more flaws then expected. Commanders of all levels then began to reissue the old version as it had less flaws. Overall the terminator pack is still in service due to the quantity the was purchased. The process to eliminate the terminator pack is in discussion which means majority of soldiers have to endure the terminator pack until the process is finalised.

Myspace vs Facebook

Myspace dominated the social network world until Facebook came along.
Zuckerberg actually offered to sell Facebook to Myspace in 2005 for $75 million but the offer was declined. Because of the growth of Facebook, Myspace started to see a decline in users, so changed their niche to flexibility and free expression which was its biggest differentiator, but this ended up being the most common reason why users left. In 2011 they changed their focus to entertainment and music only, however later that year 500 employees were fired after a sustained loss of users.
https://valuer.ai/blog/50-examples-of-corporations-that-failed-to-innovate-and-missed-their-chance/
