In middle adulthood, Erik Erikson classifies this as the Generativity versus Stagnation. Generativity is the ability to create or produce. Examples of this include having children or contributing to society. Stagnation involves life being stripped of meaning and purpose, often leaving people feeling useless. Overall, in this stage those who are in stagnation can face anxiety and depression.

The life events approach focuses on challenges and and changes that are likely to happen during middle adulthood. The most stressful life events of this age range include the death of a spouse or child, marital divorce or separation, hospitalization or change in one's health status, or the need to care for parents, and many others. A common change in middle adulthood takes place when their last child leaves home. This painful experience is known as empty nest syndrome. However, with the increase of the boomerang generation children are either staying at home longer or returning home after a period of time. As a result of the stressful, negative life events, people in middle adulthood often turn to medications, both prescribed and over-the-counter medications. Additionally, helpful family members and friends can help to relieve some of these stressors.

The big five personality traits were described by Robert McCrae and Paul Costa Jr and their colleagues. They include extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. Extroversion includes talkativeness, assertiveness, and activity instead of silence, passivity, and reserve. Agreeableness includes kindness, trust, and warmth instead of hostility, selfishness, and distrusts. Conscientiousness includes organization, thoroughness, and reliability instead of carelessness, negligence, and unreliability. Neuroticism includes nervousness, moodiness, and sensitivity to negative stimuli instead of coping ability. Openness to experience includes imagination, curiosity, and creativity instead of shallowness and lack of perceptiveness.

Daniel Levinson's Seasons of Life: Stephanie, Beth, Rachel, Shelbie and Katie

Adults go through certain periods of life termed seasons by Levinson. Life structure is a key point of seasons because it displays the patterns of everyday life. This includes career choices and relationships. The dream is another important concept because it describes the want to leave an impact on society. The midlife transition occurs between ages 40 to 45 and is the mindset that they have more to look back on than to look forward to. This can lead to the midlife crisis which is a time of anxiety and negative thoughts. Three triggers of the midlife crisis according to Levinson include menopause, death of a loved one, or a child leaving "the nest". Another trigger would be feeling that they haven't reached "the dream". Many people attempt to deny aging like buying a sports car or remodeling their home. After this crisis people feel that they have entered a second adulthood with more opportunities for fulfillment.
