When I first thought of multi aged teaching I was worried about students competing with each other. After watching the video I now know students work as "teams" or in groups to complete work. I think this is useful for the 7th graders that are advanced and looking for the opportunity to further their education. I also think this will prepared the 8th graders for high school. Also, having the choice in what they learn will encourage students to be more engaged in the classroom.

I like the idea of having your students for two years for the simple fact that you will know their strengths and their weaknesses. You will also know what concepts they mastered and what concepts they struggled with. I think this is also where pre-assessments will be extremely important to determine what lessons they will need whether it is 7th grade or 8th grade.

One of my thoughts is how much background scaffolding goes into getting students to function at that level. Middle schoolers are middle schoolers, even in Inquiry/Montessori classroom. teaching kids how to still stay on task when they have choice in their work, or how to use iPads effectively and not just play games is a process. Getting 7th graders to buy into being leaders and co learners is a process. You have to start specific with process, make sure everyone's on the same page, and slowly build to that level of independence.
-AMW

I like how I can see the parallels between a multi-age classroom and a multi-level classroom that is made up of one grade. I think a lot of the management itself would be similar (small group lessons, purposeful work time tasks...). I think where the main difference comes in is the preparation/ planning of the different types/levels of content.

I thought the comparison of the multi-age class in "The Modern Multi-Age Classroom" to families and single room schoolhouses was interesting- somewhat analogous to homeschooling principles.

I like how we're able to sort students based more on needs and abilities than by grade, but I still have concerns about student responsibility with technology. What are others strategies to train students to use their chromebooks and the Ipads effectively and responsibly in the classroom?
