She lives a lavish life, and her Papa teaches her everything about the land and how to care for it. This book takes place right after the Mexican Revolution. It is for this reason, that at the beginning of the book Papa is killed, by people who are trying to stand up to wealthy landowners as a part of the revolution. After a series of even more heartbreaking events, Esperanza's mother, and a few of their former servants flee to America, specifically California. Esperanza suddenly finds herself working the fields, trying to make enough money to help her now sick mother, and bring her Abuela to America.

By: Carl Hiaasen
Illustrated by: N/A
Year Published: 2002
Genre: Contemporary Fiction (Young Adult)

Synopsis: Roy has recently moved to Coconut Grove Florida. He doesn't love it, especially school, where the school bully loves to pick on him. He starts noticing a strange boy who runs barefoot around every day. Roy tries to hunt him down, but it becomes obvious that the barefoot-er does not want to be noticed. During his quest, he meets Beatrice who, as it turns out, is the barefoot boys step sister. His name is Mullet Fingers (which comes from his superb ability to catch mullet fish with his fingers). Unlike Beatrice and Roy, Mullet Fingers does not go to school. Soon the unlikely friends all come together to stop the construction of a pancake restaurant to save some owls that are nesting on the site. The children need to stand up to adults, and navigate legal documents. The explicit themes of the book are environmental justice, friendship, and rules. The implicit themes are childhood and never giving up.
