the Shawnee Indian tribes are autonomous. That means each tribe has its own government, laws, police, and services, just like a small country. However, the Shawnee are also US citizens and must obey American law. In the past, each Shawnee village or band was governed by its own chief and tribal council. The Shawnees also had war chiefs, who were chosen by other warriors based on their bravery and military skill. But all of them owed allegiance to one main principal chief. The principal chief was a member of the ruling clan who the other Shawnee leaders chose to be in charge of the entire tribe.

The Shawnees had a special friendship with the Wyandots. They referred to the Wyandots as their “uncles.” The Shawnee were allies of the French until British traders moved into the Ohio Country circa 1740. The French pushed the British out of Ohio and the Shawnees became allies of the French again until the British victory in the French and Indian War. he Shawnee were active in the Northwest Indian War of the 1790s, and allied with the Miami. General Anthony Wayne defeated the Shawnees and other American Indian peoples living in Ohio at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. The Shawnees were forced to surrender most of their lands in Ohio with the signing of the Treaty of Greenville. the Shawnee were mostly peaceful

So by the 1670s the Shawnee were able to get their land back again. Shawnee met English settlers around Charles town in 1674, and formed an alliance with them. In 1700 there were Shawnee living in villages spread out from Georgia in the south to modern Illinois. At this time the Shawnee were very powerful. They organized themselves and other native people to resist the European settlers.Shawnee ruler Tecumseh. By the 1730s, however, things were going worse again. British settlers were moving into Shawnee land. In 1753, the western Shawnee sent messengers inviting the Virginia Shawnee to leave Virginia to white people and come join them in Ohio, and soon there were no more Shawnee in Virginia. They joined the Ohio Shawnee, and together they sided with the French in the Wars between the British and the French over the Midwest.
