One of the deadliest mass shootings in American history happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012. There were twenty children around the age of 6 or 7 killed, including six adult staff members. 20-year-old Lanza killed his mother at home with a gun, then proceeded to drive the family vehicle to school. According to a law enforcement official, he took three firearms from the house a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle manufactured by Bushmaster and pistols made by Glock and Sig Sauer—and proceeded to the elementary school while dressed in black fatigues and a military vest. There were about 700 students present that day. Eventually law enforcement arrived and Lanza committed suicide as police broke into the school following the massacre. After looking into the tragedy, investigators found that Nancy, Adam Lanza's mother, was the first victim to die. She had a passion for guns, and the shooter took inspiration for his shooting spree from her arsenal.

Summary Killing of Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin, a Black high school student, was visiting his family on February 26, 2012, when he was strolling through a gated community. As a member of the neighborhood watch organization, George Zimmerman approached Martin because he thought he posed a threat. As there was an altercation Zimmerman shot and killed a Trayvon leaving him charged with second degree murder. This left many heart broken, but also furious; especially because Zimmerman was found not guilty for his actions. Zimmerman was on the phone with the 911 operator and told them he is going to follow Trayvon, but he was instructed to not follow him. Zimmerman says he was using self defense to protect him self from Trayvon, but seems like that wasn't the case. The only reason Zimmerman was not found guilty is due to the law in Florida "Stand your ground." That law indicates that when a person has a legitimate belief that using lethal force is essential to protect themselves against certain serious offenses, they may do so. Protestors around the nation turned out in anger, wearing T-shirts and holding banners that said, "I am Trayvon Martin." Civil rights activist say Zimmerman should be arrested and started to use the term "racially motivated." Trayvons death sparked the movement "Black Lives Matter" Movement and it opened peoples eyes to how these people are getting treated.

Sandy Hook Present Day Connection

The Sandy Hook shooting occurred in 2012, that was 12 years ago! That shooting was really heartbreaking knowing these kids were only in elementary. Knowing some of the survivors graduated high school is such a blessing. No one should ever experience a school shooting ever in their lifetime, but sadly these kids were victims of a horrible event. In 2022, there was another school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Robb Elementary was shot up by an 18 year old male who walked into the school building and shot fired. The difference between the two school shootings were how fast it took law enforcement to act. During Sandy Hook officers arrived and went in as quickly as they can, but in Robb Elementary it took about 77 minutes for law enforcement to act and go in to save the children. Many families and citizens upset hearing about their kids or friends being killed because the cops didn't go in like they should've. There is a clip of an officer putting on hand sanitizer instead of going into help the children in danger and that made many people furious. They questioned why the cop cared more about Covid instead of the lives in risk. 21 people dead including children and adult because officers weren't "ready" to go in.

It is honestly sad we have a movement called "Black Lives Matter." Why does did need to be address? Black people or people of colored have always been a target and treated poorly, this shouldn't be the case in anyway. God created all humans and made them to spread love, but clearly people lacked that feature. Trayvon's murder affected many people to the point they wanted to spread a message and start a protest. Protest and really denegrous, but it helps get peoples voices to be hear. There were many incidents with black Americans being killed for no reason, and there is always proof that there was no reason for that person to be killed. George Floyd was a victim who sadly passed away due to a cop suffocating him because he apparently was resisting the arrest. These tragic actions are no accident and show how cruel people can be and it is so sad. Black Lives Matter and should be respected like any other human. Trayvon was just trying to visit his father's fiance and was killed, for doing absolutely nothing. It's crazy how society works.
