Mordecai Anielewicz was born in 1919 in Wyszków, near Warsaw. He had a working class family. He joined a Zionist Youth organization as a boy because he wanted Jewish rights.

The Start of WW2

When WW2 started He fled to Romania and joined a new Zionist youth Group. After some time he went to Warsaw to build an underground organization against Nazis, ZOB.

First Battle

In January 1943, he had his first battle with German soldiers. He was already a ZOB leader so everyone followed orders. After the battle, they started preparing for an armed fight in the ghetto.

Death

On may 8th, 1943 Anielewicz led a battle on Mila street against the Germans. He tried to stop them from taking over a bunker but they weren't strong enough. He died from mass suicide. Him and his fighters all killed themselves while defending their base.

After his death, he inspired many other uprisings in other ghettos and camps. Also after he died, it showed that Jewish people can and will fight back against the Nazis.

When he built the bunkers underground he was determined to also equip them with weapons. He make sure to grab as many weapons as he could and also made sure to start an organisation. He was a leader that had lots of courage so no one questioned his authority. He managed to lead them for several weeks before his death.

Even after he died, many people kept his legacy alive in textbooks, conversation, and more. He will never be forgotten for his courage during WW2. Even though he was only 24 he will always be known for being a war hero.
