When building this learning structure in our classrooms, it was critical to demonstrate and focus our teaching on what the children and teacher are to do within each of the five components. It is this explicit teaching and practicing of behaviors that sets the Daily 5 apart from the other management systems that we have tried over the years. It is amazing to see that teachers are willing to accept change and try different strategies until they find one that works. I am a little scared to be a teacher. I know it will take a couple of years to figure out what works and what doesn't.

We agreed with Gaea Lienhardt, Naomi Zigmond, and William Cooley who found that the way teachers structure the learning environment and the way students spend their time influences the level of reading proficiency the students have attained by the end of the academic year. The structure of the learning environment is crucial. Students need the organized classroom from the teacher in order to be focused, or at least I know I did in school. I couldn't stand teachers that weren't organized.

The daily 5 is the framework that gives structure to these components of comprehension literacy. This framework helps us manage each piece of our literacy time simply and effectively. I think the daily 5 is a great way to organize literacy time. I think it really organizes the time through out the day, so there is no wasted time.

The block begins with a whole-group focus lesson taken from our CAFE menu. Students then move into their first Daily 5 choice. While they are independently participating in their choice, we are able to confer with individuals, meet with a small group, or conduct an individual assessment. I really like the idea that the teachers are able to meet with the students in a small group or one-on-one, I think it is a great opportunity to see where the students are at, their strengths and weaknesses and it just builds the bond between the teacher and student.

We do not let age dictate the number of rounds in which our students participate. Instead, the number of rounds of Daily 5 is reflective of the amount of time students can maintain reading and writing independently. I also like how the Daily 5 accommodates to the needs of the students. Some students stamina may be longer than others.

Daily 5 offers choice for students, the CAFE system offers choice for the teacher. Daily 5 and CAFE working together becomes the perfect model to use for differentiating our instruction to best meet the needs of all students in our classrooms. I really like that the Daily 5 offers choice for the students. As I have mentioned, choice gives them a sense of feeling independent. Students will most likely be more motivated and want to do the work if they get a choice.

We began with a teacher-driven model that relied on busywork, workbooks, packets, and inauthentic reading and writing activities, which resulted in low student engagement. We progressed to centers, then to a workshop model, and finally to where we are now. This just goes back to the idea that teachers aren't afraid of change and want the best for their classrooms.

Typically, eight to twelve weeks from the beginning of launching the Daily 5 we notice we are calling our children back for a focus lesson because time has run out rather than because off-task behaviors have shown us their stamina has run out. This is our indiciation that it is time to drop off one round of the daily 5 in order to give children more uninterrupted time to read and write.
