Holy Week is one of the country's largest celebrations, featuring multiple processions throughout Spain's cities. These processions are held at night, and aim to tell the story of Christ's Passion. This celebration deeply engages the entire city, and involves carefully planned and detailed outfits and works for the procession. It is not uncommon for some competition to spark between Spain's cities when it comes to the grandiosity of these celebrations, though Seville, Spain is known for putting the most thought and organization into its Holy Week procession, which is pictured below.

The Pilgrimage to El Rocío

El Rocío is a small, nearly empty town near Spain's southern coast which holds the shrine of Nuestra Señora del Rocío (Our Lady of the Dew). Many residents of Spain celebrate Pentecost by going to visit Nuestra Señora del Rocío - for three days, the usually quiet town of El Rocío is flooded with Spanish Catholics, who arrive in decorated horse and wagon trains decorated in florals. Upon arrival to El Rocío, the feast begins with a procession throughout the city commemorating Nuestra Señora del Rocío, followed by much singing, dancing, celebration and devotion - this Marian pilgrimage is anything but somber.

The Importance of First Communion In Spain

One's first communion is a celebration of utmost importance in Spain, as it is a tradition deeply rooted in Spain's religious culture. Tt is not uncommon for families to put aside much of their money or strain themselves financially in order to create the proper first communion celebration - one that God would want. Spain's first communion celebrations are not unlike miniature weddings, involving a party and the process of carefully choosing girls' dresses for the day of the sacrament and the celebration.
