I wanted to showcase the album cover just because its so simple and pretty just like the album. It has these bright colors yet isn't to distracting. And I also love how small the print of the album name is because it really gets you to focus on her and the simplicity of the contrasting colors not just this bold title blocking out the entire cover.

This is one of the songs off Musgraves last album that won a best country album grammy in 2016. This is one of my all time favorite songs because it shows how she was brought up in a country town and then traveled everywhere to become the singer she is today. Plus she mentions Austin which is where I am from so its super cool to hear her sing about it.

In one of the interviews I rad she talked about her love for Dolly Parton and I even ended up comparing her Dolly just because they have simmilar musical career paths. So I found this picture of them online together and it just brought it full circle for me and I thought it was so fun to see them both together.
pic: http://www.umusic.ca/2018/04/06/country-kacey-musgraves/944322_1018588724882570_4195941223219096187_n/

“One of the remarkable things about Musgraves is not how much she has deviated from country norms, but the way she expands them.”

I love this quote, Especially for her new album where she is mixing two different genres and making them one. She isn't trying to loose her roots but instead enhance them in a wonderful way. A lot of people think its bad to be mixing these genres or are saying she's not staying true to herself but I think that this quote shows she's doing the exact opposite and just making her album even better, thats why its selling so well too.

“The mystical grandeur of Golden Hour creates a magnetic effect as Kacey Musgraves sings simply about the world as if she’s the first person to notice, and you’re the first one she’s telling.”

This was another quote I found from a Blog on pitchfork about Musgraves new album. This quote went exactly with my whole review and touched base on the real meaning behind the album. She isn't solving any problems but instead showing us to appreciate the world in a new way. Some times we just need to embrace the moment and that is what this album is all about. Mixing thoughtful and upbeat tunes that anyone could love.

Musical Examples: Lonely Weekend

I think this encompasses Ratliff's chapter on Transmission perfectly. In the chapter he discuses that transmission is a feeling of raw emotion that an artist or listener gets when hearing a certain song. When I heard the song “Lonely Weekend” it hit close to home because she talked about being lonely on a weekend, having a million things but not doing one, and wishing she could spend it with the one she loves. Coming to college I had several weekends like that where I missed my family and friends so to hear the transmission in her voice and feel the emotion she was portraying first hand, truly spoke volumes to me. Ratliff said "When you have a great gift in music and a set great amount of energy toward maintaining and developing it--when you have dedicated your life to an idea of excellence and then self-preservation--then you are practicing a form of transmission every time you play." (Ratliff 55) Musgraves has finally reached that point in her career where she's experienced first hand what she's singing about and its taking her songs to the next level, which is why the album is doing so well.

General Take on the album

This Golden Hour is going to last a lot longer than an hour for Musgraves after the recent release of her 5th album. She reinvents herself like never before, with a mix of simple and smooth country songs, with a few pop country ones thrown in the mix. As someone who doesn't particularly love country, this album changed my mind completely, in a new and fresh way that I have never experienced with an album before. Musgraves buts her heart out on the line and describes this technicolor world like never before, mixed with such raw emotions reaching to the highest of highs and the lowest lows. This album is easy to listen and relate to while still keeping the songs fresh and fun which is why I think it will be the album of the summer. I genuinely fell in love with this album after listening to each song over and over again and relating it to my own life. It had a great mix of calming emotional songs and songs that make you wanna get up and dance. It has been so fun writing about it and finding out the meaning behind each song, I can't wait to see where else she goes with this new pop/country genre.

Preview of my Review

"The album is revolutionary in the sense that she is able to speak from her heart about love and what its like living every day you have on this earth to its fullest. In past albums they have focused a lot on her country roots and she strayed away from love songs because she didn't know how it felt to be in love. Now that she is married she has found this new side of her that she's expressing through this beautiful album. While portraying this message she is also mixing up her country style to go a little more into pop and make her songs just a little different from what she's done in the past. If you take anything from this album though, its that we need to embrace life more and appreciate every moment. Currently we feel a lot of tension from various things going on in the world right now, but Musgraves album is letting us take a break from the constant negativity even if its just for a moment. She isn't trying to start a revolution or take on a controversial topic, but instead is trying to show all the wonderful and pure things this world has to offer. This album won't fix any problems, but it will help relieve them and put you in a great mood." I chose to put this excerpt in from one of my last paragraphs because it talks about the significance and meaning behind the album. It's not as impactful as some other revolutionary ones out there, but I think its just the kind of album people need these days, something good and wholesome that makes you forget about stress for a little while.

I found this posted on Musgraves Twitter along with her album cover and it really inspired me in writing my essay. I touched on what she was trying to say in the excerpt just a little in my review, but I would have loved to add more. These words capture her album so perfectly and I don't think anyone could have said it any better. This is a time to be present and shed light on these dark times and that's exactly what this album is doing for everyone in such a pure and fun way. (I enlarged it so you could read the small text)
