To build literacy skills and early reading skills, in a large group you can put a photo from a magazine, or a photo you have found online and have students share what they see. You can write the word of what they see and draw a line to the object in the photo. Then as a whole group you can brainstorm a title or sentence for the photo to summarize what they are seeing in the photo.

Making each table a community location. Drawing and labeling the community place. Then discussing each location.

Small group rotations: listen to reading, journals, emergent readers (letter or thematic), and write the room. Each group does one activity per day and then it rotates. Fridays are directed drawing-based.

In our morning circle the kids all pass our "Puppy" as the talking item and use the same common, repetitive language:

"Can I please have puppy?"

"Sure you can" or "Yes you can"

"Thank you"

"You're welcome"

Once holding the puppy, students can share whatever their response is to our common question or prompt for that circle.

Student of the week posters. Students have to present their posters and practice speaking skills and also rest of class has to "interview" them on another day of the week.
