1. A Brief History of Education by Peter Gray (2008)
"The teacher says, "you must do your work and then you can play." Clearly, according to this message, work, which encompasses all of school learning, is something that one does not want to do but must; and play, which is everything that one wants to do, has relatively little value. That, perhaps, is the leading lesson of our method of schooling. If children learn nothing else in school, they learn the difference between work and play and that learning is work, not play."
Image: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=http%3A%2F%2Fparentingsquad.com%2Fhow-to-beat-the-back-to-school-blues&psig=AOvVaw1584vI4GNI_vFrnGQMb2Ax&ust=1624304236159000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAoQjRxqFwoTCMiZ2MX7pvECFQAAAAAdAAAAABAO

2. The "Opportunity Gap" in US Public Education- And How To Fix It by Anindya Kundu (2019)
"Cultivating as much talent as possible, getting as many girls as we can from all over into science and engineering, as many boys as we can into teaching -- those are investments for our future. Our students are like our most valuable resource, and when you put it that way, our teachers are like our modern-day diamond and gold miners, hoping to help make them shine. And that's the idea I want to leave you with, that your true self is not something that you will have to go searching for, as a mystery, and maybe never ever find.

If there is one takeaway from this assignment, it's that schooling, identity, and pop culture are strongly connected. I believe identity is at the foreground of every aspect of our lives. Who we are, and why we are that way, is extremely important and is something that many things, including schooling and pop culture, have an influence on. The experiences we go through during schooling, and the things we involve ourselves with in pop culture continuously help shape and influence our identities.
A similarity shared between identity, schooling, and pop culture is that they are always changing. Our identities are constantly evolving, and Julian Baggini"s TED Talk "Is There a Real You?" does a good job at illustrating this. Baggini illustrates how we are in control of our identities, and how we have the capability to always change them. Similar to identity, pop culture is another thing that is always changing. Ever since the term "popular culture" was coined, it's always been evolving. In Phil Miller's TED Talk, "Pop Culture Is Dead!" he elaborates on the changes pop culture has gone through over the years, and that now pop culture is dominated by mass media and smartphones. Social media and recent technology have greatly impacted pop culture, and pop culture today is not the same as it used to be due to these technological changes. Schooling is also always changing and evolving. As noted in Peter Gray's "A Brief History of Education," school has drastically changed from what it used to be. Schooling, identity, and pop culture are all constantly changing and evolving. What we experience in school and enjoy in pop culture are always shaping our identities. These three things are always working continuously to help us become who we are.
