It's important for kids to have a little background.

-Ask their own questions: Helps students think deeper about the material as well as form ideas about the text.

- KWL: Lets the teacher know what the students know and lets the students think about how to apply their background knowledge to the text.

-KWL: a reading strategy that engages the student in determining what they already know about a topic, what they would like to know, and what they learn by the end of the reading
-Guided Imagery: a strategy that brings about mental pictures and creative descriptions of a concept. Would be useful for particulate models in science.
-Discussion webs: this would be a good way to connect related concepts in science. This strategy helps students break down information.

(Social Studies)

-Guided Imagery: Allows for students to see concepts with a visual aid. This is being done in my Economics class currently with demand graphs.

- Anticipation Guides: Questions that prepare students for the reading they are about to do. This would work great in a history class to help get students focused on the historical context before reading.

-Active Comprehension: This is asking questions to get students ready for the reading, but also peak their interest about the topic/concept at hand.

- Story Impressions – allows students to be creative in their writing (I learned during my interviews that many students at my placement long for opportunities to show their creativity) and recognize key words associated with a story’s plot, setting, and characters.

- Anticipation Guides and subsequent discussions – I liked Vacca and Vacca’s adaptation of an anticipation guide for the Civil War. It seems like an enjoyable way to activate students’ schema, get them to make predictions about a topic or text, and assess what they already know about a topic.

- Intra-act – I like this after-reading strategy because it asks students to reflect on their own values and attitudes about a topic and prepares them for sharing their thoughts in small-group or whole class discussions.

(Spanish/Psychology)

1. KWL strategy: this is a reading strategy that has the students asking themselves what they Know, What they want to know, and what the students Learn. This strategy would be useful in my teaching when I am teaching culture in Latin America.

2. ReQuest strategy: this strategy would be useful in my teaching because I would be able to use it for any ELL that I may have in my classroom.

3. Active Comprehension strategy: I would also be able to use this strategy with my students when I am teaching a cultural lesson plan. I would be able to show them a picture of a person, a map, etc. and ask them what they would like to know about that picture.
