One thing that I found really interesting when reading, was the section on retention.

"Research on retention has found that students who are retained for purely academic reasons do not benefit at all from this approach to their education and are actually seriously harmed by it" (p. 25)

I coded this section with * this is important! I find that many times retention is considered and students are retained mostly due to academic reasons.

While reading about the importance of food and water during the day for students, made me think about and reflect on the way my school day is laid out for my students. Of course, as teachers, we are all aware that students need food and water throughout the day in order to keep them engaged and functioning. But, what stuck out to me was the way that it can be done throughout the day.

As I reflected on this reading, I thought a lot about myself as a learner (code T-S, text to self). During PD sessions, many times there is a layout of snacks for people to help themselves. It is so nice having the option to get up, when convenient for you, to get some snacks during the session. I find myself most engaged when I am able to fulfill my needs and continue to learn while doing that.

How awesome to have a layout of snacks for students to go to when they feel the need. Obviously, a lot of modeling and discussion of how this should be completed during a lesson will need to be done, but I would be so interested to see if there is a difference in engagement and participation during lessons.

As a K teacher, I know that exercise and recess are SO important for students. I feel as if 30 minutes a day is not nearly enough. Many times throughout the day I I provide students with movement and brain breaks, but only so much movement can occur in a small classroom. In the beginning of the year I try to break up our day with some time outside, but many times feel guilty. WHY? I know that best practice suggests this and how important it is, but on the other hand the demands that are being put on teachers in constantly in the back of my mind.

I love the part on p.19 that states, "in our classrooms, the lack of a midday break often makes the afternoon a downhill journey of inattention and listlessness, which the children focusing on the moment of dismissal." This is so true!! I notice this in my classroom, but also as the teacher!
