Viruses are microscopic parasites, generally much smaller than bacteria. They are so small that they need to be seen expertly by a microscope. They lack the capacity to thrive and reproduce outside of a host body. So therefore they can only multiply on living hosts or in a living cell. They are also know to be highly contagious.
