In college I took a class about the War on Drugs with Professor Juan Lindau, and his class made me really passionate about criminal justice reform and drug policy reform. He taught me about the importance of treating drug users with compassion and using rehabilitation rather than punishment to address the use of highly addictive drugs like heroin. His class opened my eyes to the injustices in our criminal justice system overall and helped me see the need for reform in how our government treats people who use drugs. My experience in his class led me to support policies like shorter sentences for people who buy and sell drugs, and legalizing drugs like marijuana.

With my mom being from an entirely different continent, I have been able to get a little more perspective on how America's politics are viewed in another place of the world. Additionally, my dad would make sure to keep me updated on our world by showing me important news, but I also got a lot of information from my older sister.

My would always make me sit with them on their bed when I was little, and watch the news. As I got older I started to ask question about what was happening, and they would almost always answer. During middle school is when I feel like I had started to develop an opinion since that was near when Trump became president. Going through that today my opinions has only been growing and changing as I learn more, and start to understand more of what is happening in the world. I hope to maybe make a difference one day even in a small way.

My mom never was shy to tell me about her struggles immigrating here and getting my family together. When she was 18 and in the States, it took many years and a lot of money to get my uncles (her little brothers) and my grandma (her mother) into the country. At the same time, she was trying to arrange for my dad to fly in as well. It was very stressful for her as the only one in the States. The U.S. didn't treat her the best either as a woman of color. This led me to think that immigration should not be this complicated and hard, because people want to immigrate here for a reason. A better life, a new start, refuge. It shouldn't take so long and take so much effort just to complete a family.
