King uses this quote in his letter to the Clergy men because they don't understand his point of view. The Clergy only think of King as somebody who is trying to start riots and trying to upset the system of laws, but, King only wants justice and he wants his fellow Clergy men to see that he is being treated unfairly and that changes need to be made. He says "Wait." He means, take a minute, look at your life and look at mine, the same career, yet so different due to the color of the skin I was born in.

This quote, which uses repetition by saying "when you" over and over again, has a major impact on this letter. "When you..." being repeated creates dramatic effect. It also makes the clergymen feel guilty and realize how harsh and evil their actions are, such as lynching mothers. Another impact these two words have on this letter is that they give you the African American's perspective.

This shows an event similar to the ones mentioned in the "When you..." statements because it shows unjustified hate received by African Americans. It is also interesting that it seems fine for white people to protest even though the people actually getting hurt aren't allowed to.

King feels that he has to use repetition in his letter because that's the only way the Clergymen will truly understand how bad things are getting. They don't see things from King's point of view and they never will because they will probably never be treated as lesser beings. Repetition is significant in Letter From Birmingham Jail because it helps Dr. King justify his ideas. His repetition makes his opinions more clear and expresses the way he feels about certain topics. With use of the words "when you" and "wait" he shows that he has been lied to for his whole life and he needs change for the African-American community.
