So during reconstruction, plantations owners had to work on their own. They weren't really used to it either because before the war they had slaves. Sharecropping was the new thing and tenant farming was new too. To work the land sharecroppers had to buy seeds and implements, from plantation owners who often priced them ridiculously high.

During reconstruction former slaves were now called freedmen they fought in the war for there freedom, they fought in the war to earn their name. Most freedman men or former slaves now have jobs. Some still work on plantations but use tools and get paid with crops to feed their families.

Many white small farmers turned to cotton production during Reconstruction as a way of obtaining needed cash. As cotton prices declined, many lost their land. By 1880, one third of the white farmers in the cotton states were tenants rather than landowners. Few of these farmers grew much cotton; they preferred to concentrate on food crops for their own families, marketing only a small surplus, and making most of the tools, clothing, and other items they needed at home.

People from the north started coming in the south getting jobs and living there. Although they were living in the south they still supported the north. These people were called carpetbaggers. They moved to the south after the war to take advantage. This also caused a lot of issues throughout the south having northerners make smart remarks on how they do things and people fighting in the streets of the south.
